shaking steering wheel at highway speeds

My 01 996tt steering wheel shakes at highway speeds. I have had my wheels balanced several times and the shaking keeps on coming back. My wheels are stock but they are powder coated. Tires are new.
After they are balanced they don't shake for about 50 miles. But then they start up again.

Any ideas what is going on.

if you have deep dish reverse lip and it has been raining the wheels can retain water and that will cause the imbalance..otherwise, if you haven't experienced it before these new tires, you may have a bad one

Hard to say if you have had the tires rebalanced a number of times. Possibly an alignment problem, wheel bearings on their way out, loose suspension part? Have a professional inspect the car.

It's probably due to a slight bend in one or more of your wheels. A pot hole can do that.

How old are the tyres? If they are old and the car has been sat for a long period they could have gone out of round.

Also check that the mounting face on the hubs hasn't got any paint on them when they were painted.

After that you need to start checking the suspension and steering components.

I just installed coilovers and anti sway bars. But it was happening before and after the install.

Could it be that the powder coat is making the weights fall off. Does powder coating have that affect?

Does it come on fairly quickly at a specific speed and go away if you continue to increase speed? If so it is definitely the balancing - take it somewhere else. If the place you are using doesn't affix the weights properly, they could be falling off.

Powder coat does not "make" weights fall off.

Are the wheels unbalanced when they've redone them? Are they saying weights are 'gone'?

Have you tried a Hunter 9700 "road force" balance or 'road force matching'?? That WILL tell you if the wheel has any imperfection AND if the tire has any issues. Balance is one thing, but some tires have 'flex irregularities' as the wheel rotates such that it creates a vibration- even though perfectly 'balanced'

I had an out of round tire which I thought was imbalance. I also have a slight bend in a wheel. Sometime I feel it and sometimes I don't. If the tire gets hot I think it gets better.

Agree with earlier post; get all four of you wheels on a Roadforce machine. You'll have your answers.

I've had this kind of problem on a different car (Honda) -- it didn't go completely away until the tires were changed. At least in my case, it was the tires. How close are you to needing a replacement in the tires?

First is the wheel easily removed? If not there is material on the rim or hub preventing them from being parallel when torqued. I've seen this alot in other cars mainly BMW's. Since it's felt in the steering wheel it's from the fronts. Jack the car up and spin the wheels and look for any movement in the rim, both axial and radial - monitor both the inside and outside edges. Next, monitor any visual movement in the tire sidewall and tread area. If you see nothing it's the tire balance, but unlikely since you've done it repeately.

if the weights are coming off tape them down with aluminum tape.

have the tires road force balanced also have them checked for being round/bent

next search about wheel bearings on here and see if that is the issue.

how old are the tires have they always done this vibration or recently noticed it?

He states that the tires are new so my question is did this issue occur before the new tire install?

Plus 1 on this Hunter machine. I had a set of "problem" tires that 3 different places couldn't balance. Then I found a place that used this machine and they were perfect after that.

Your tires are flat spotting overnight and when they warm up they return to their proper shape. There is nothing wrong with your tires.
