New to the Porsche section, but not to the site! Purchasing a 996 Turbo
Hey guys! I've been on 6speed for some time. From my 1st S4, to my E46 m3, back to a stage 3 S4, now to move onto the 996 Turbo.
I wanted to welcome myself to this side of the forum. I'm excited to make my 1st Porsche purchase while eager to learn more about this car. I've driven a few Turbos including the 997 and I just love these cars!
I wont burden you with questions I can just search for, but would like to get some of your opinions.
I'm looking to spend around $40,000 and have my eye on a few. One in particular is an '01 with 31,000 miles. I was thinking of waiting for a newer year, but can only find that the differences are as little as a glove box and sub woofer for '02 and up. I don't care for that as much as I care for the options, color, and miles on the vehicle. Of coarse I'd opt out on the '01 if I saw a comparable newer Turbo, and I'm sure I can in a few months time. Other than those difference, is there really anything else? Engine, cooling, etc.?
I already know about the turbo and inter cooler upgrade for the X50, but cannot find any in my price range.
Thanks for the help in advanced and I look forward to my purchase within a few weeks.

Hello,
Earlier this month I purchased a 03 996 Tubro x50 for just under 40K. It had 67k miles but ALL records and was Porsche certified and Porsche inspected. I found the car in the LA area, I am from the San Jose area, CA. There was another X50 in Fremont CA for 51K with only 25k miles, car was in same condition as the one with 67K miles, so paying over 12K for 40K less miles didn't make sense. Also, I was able to purchase an after market warrenty for the Porsche that goes for 4 years, so that gave me some comfort for anything major going wrong (except for the clutch and brakes).
There are good deals to be had on a 996 Turbo in the 40K range, if you really want an x50 you'll have to sacrifice on mileage or money. Take your time looking, I did. That was the tough part was taking the time and passing on a couple REALLY nice 996's at a very good price because I wanted to see what the market was like. I wasn't targeting a x-50, just 'happened' into it!

That is true. I am not afraid of miles, I just would love to own a low mile 996 with around 30k. No particular reason. I don't care that much for the x50 package as I will most definitely upgrade the turbos eventually and a software upgrade. K24s bolt right up.

Yeah, a little research and I found that a software upgrade along with an upgrade to the intake system will yeild enough HP to push me over 500 (at crank) on the x50. That is far cheaper than getting a 996t and doing the upgrades to get you the same 500hp result. The price difference between a good 996t and 996 x50 is almost nil and especially if you wait around for a good deal.
Good luck in your search.

I looked on Cars.com, Ebaymotors, Trader, 6speed, craigslist, and probably a few others. I think I found mine on cars.com. If you want an already done up one, 6speed is probalby best to lurk around on...
Thanks, I like this '01. GT2 front bumper, Carbon fiber interior package, sport seats, Red safety belts, Lowered with wheels and has stock wheels.
I can pick up k24s for a pretty good price. I'm already going to do a flash, exhaust, and 997tt short shift upgrade.
If you guys happen to stumble across any nice ones, don't hesitate to post up!
