Swapping guage cluster keep mileage???

Ok long story short, I'm looking at buying an excellent condition 996 turbo.

The owner tells me that his original guage cluster stopped working, so he purchased a new one from the dealer.

Now my question is..... should I trust what the mileage states on the cluster? Or would he have started back at 0 when he installed the new one?

You have to get the ecu data (PIWIS, Durametric or PST2) it will give you the engine hours. And the average is about 30 miles per hour.... ex: 1232 hours mean about 36960 miles. It give you rough idea....

So the car would read the new clusters' milage unless I read the ECU?

Jp is correct. The ECU will read out the hours on the car even if the cluster has been changed. I would not trust the milage on the cluster unless it was done at a dealer and fully documented. You should do a PPI on it anyway. Check for type 2 over revs etc. PIWIS show all kinds of interesting stuff.

Mileage is stored in the cluster and when a dealer installs a new cluster they program the mileage into it. ECU has run time, which can vary alot based on how the car was used most of its life. Run carfax and look at the mileage history and you can also request paperwork from the dealer.

jayster is infamous around these parts
The DME logs distance in kilometers, you should adapt the cluster to the DME's figure.
BTW, have the mileage pulled off the DME before you buy....
