Importance of boost leak test

I often preach about pressure testing the car from the turbos... and while there check the compressor wheel and maybe the wgs... do they open at the same time etc...

So today a 6speed member dropped off his K16s which I was about to do the billet wheel upgrade but before I took them in I decided to put a Mytivac gauge on the actuator... see where they crack open... then I found this.... a leaking Wg... and he had no idea...

Invest in a $100 pressure test kit you guys.... drop the car off at a local shop that has a big compressor... get it tested once a year- at least... trust me...

Even if no leak you can equalize perfectly both wastegates so one is not lazier than the other.

A BIT off Topic Markski, but has anyone tried running a smaller turbo on one side and a bigger one on the other? May be silly but that may help spool and big end power?

This is a must even with brand new turbos. I was surprised to find my Tial Alphas were not even close to being equal crack pressure. Spool up was much better after finding this out.

Even though I got mine used, the left one was opening at 0.8 bar and the right one at 1.0bar...

I am pressure testing my car right now after a clutch install and injectors. Initial test was no leaks, but then a vac hose popped off under the Y pipe. Cleaned it and zip tied it and will reinstall the Y pipe and test again! Not only will you find leaks, but weak connections as well!

That is crazy the WGs were leaking like that!

You test them with a manual pump, attahed to the needle on the WG's. Pump slowly and see at what pressure they crack open.

The larger the difference the wg opens the greater chance you can stall the turbo on the open gate. I was thinking about running a equalizer line say 3/4'' right before the turbo or wastegate (on external gates) to make sure both turbos see the same back psi.

Where do you guys get your adaptors to test? Not the wastegate but the whole system i mean. Do you do it at the turbo inlet or do you just take out the air box and do it from there?
