a member on RL has over 300K miles on the original engine and tracks his car occasionally. that should say something about the prospects for engine longevity.
I don't really think 80k is a lot of miles for a 996tt. A Porsche is the only supercar that can double as a daily driver. As the other poster stated. The guy on RL has over 300k on his car. He even drives it in the snow. He has also posted up his list of repairs over the years, and it's a pretty short list.

It's a roll of the dice. My car ran perfectly up to 103,000 miles when the intermediate shaft woodruf keys wore out, resulting in a full engine tear down. Fortunately, I can buy my parts at cost and have a shop that offered to do the work at well under market price. This is a very expensive job. IM shafts have gone anywhere from 20K mioles on, so you never know...I think low miles is a better bet on these cars, especially if you plan to mod. The IM shaft is generally accepted as a weak point in the design.
Note: My car was modded from the time it was 3 months old, so it had a harder life than a stock car...I attribute the IM shaft failure to 8 years of increased HP/torque...but many OEM cars have had the same problem at only 20-40K miles.
