Changing My Windshield Question

No, I'm not doing it myself but getting it replaced by Autolite.

The question I have is that there is a choice between the stock blue tint and another windshield with a green tint.

Anyone have any experience with the green tint windshield and would you recommend it?

TIA!

whomever does the install for you make sure they have done porsches before, i would also get the instructions from porsche as they are very specific, i learnt the hard way, was done badly once, then badly repaired, then apparently fixed, but now it squeeks/rattles constantly which is a common side affect if its not installed 100% properly

Do you mean Safelite? They are the Earl Schieb of windshields...they are absolute the cheapest and use only their own methods. They hack out the old, squirt in their own urethane and glue on the new glass... they DO NOT use Porsche materials, Porsche gaskets and caulk, or Porsche methods.

Ask if their methods- not the materials, but the actual method- will result in a car that continues to meet the original safety standards...then tell them to put that in writing. They will say 'our materials are approved'... but that's it.

A concern I have from a botched job 15 years ago is damage to the paint/seal and how that can lead to water intrusion and rust- you'll never know until it is too late.

A

Let me know if you need the name of the shop.

Hey Doc, you should ask Carlsen Porsche who they use. They subcontract that work.

Ard and buzzm thanks for what to watch out for.

I'll call Carlson Porsche here and maybe just go there at least I'm sure it'll get done correctly.

I bet they will just sub it out and make money on top of it. You might call and ask who they use.

I called Carlson and they gave me the name of the mobile autoglass company they use and I'll just have them do it. They get the glass from Carlson and use all of the required parts, sealants, etc, so I'm sure it'll be done right.

thats what i thought when i used the largest company in the state that the largest porsche dealer in new england reccomended and still ended up having it completely trashed

if you do nothing else at least have it done at your house and do not drive your car for a few days so the glue can completely cure, make sure whomever does the install has done a porsche before, the manager of the company told me that they are incredibly hard installs and the guy that was sent to do my car never should have been doing it

Wow, goes to show you what to watch out for, thanks! I'll definitely have them do it at my house and ask the tech who is actually doing the work how many of these has he done before.

I'm having my 996TT windshield replaced also this week.

The insurance will guaranty the install if I use their network of installers. in this case it is Glass America in Fairfield CT.I insisted they use an OEM glass.

In the past I have had to redo a P car install because the radio antenna did not work properly. The insurance company made them do it period.

BTW there was a Tech paper about creaking windshields. The fix is a thin white teflon gasket that Porsche supplied.

Glass Plus - Bay area mobile service.

I used them last year for my TT and MDX and they did an excellent job. Very meticulous.
