investigating window non-drop

i have found what looks to be a stretched cable in the forward part of the regulator, at least i think that is what it is... there is play and i can remove it by pulling back the 'foreskin' as it were, the outer part of the cable, is there a way to adjust out the play or am i in for a new regulator? oh please gawd noo, but, i know the cost of doin bisness, but an adjustment would be convenient, still better than drivin a cab in havana

It seems regulators are pretty common repair... I have one I need to install. Might as well replace it if you have it out!
