Tiptronic Issues

Hi people,

Started reading the forum a bit more and seems like a wealth of info on here. I'm based over in the UK but thought it was worth posting about my TIP box and the fact I don't think it's right.

When changing up from 2nd to 3rd to 4th etc teh revs seems to rise a little more than they should in between changes. Also yesterday I changed down from third doing about 2500-3000 revs into second and rather than engine brake the car the revs seemed to shoot up as if in neutral.

I used to have TIP in another car and it felt much better.

Cars done 50k miles. Any ideas what could be causing this? Do these symptons sound familiar to a known fault with the TIP box?

Any advice appreciated - thanks,

FRANKY

I had a VW that had a transmission that started with this type of behavior and it was a sign it had let go. I didn't fix, but it just got worse, mine acted up on inclines.

Franky,

Your tranny is likely going south. Time to rebuild when it start doing that. If your car has added horsepower, you may consider upgrading it.

Hi,
Why don't you give: http://www.nineexcellence.com/ (there based near London)a call. I have just had my tip modded by MKB. Kens sends them out to Germany to have them done.
if you give them a call and explain your problem he might be able to talk you through the problems.
However, firstly I would have your tip fluid level checked and at 50k it wouldn't do any hard to have the fluid changed along with the filter .
Its not an easy thing to do but its long winded as apposed to being difficult. The Fluid is not cheep btw. Naff fluid and especially low level will cause your problems.
The other reason for your type of fault is a worn clutch pack, but this is normally on 3rd to 4th gear change. The other reason and more likely in your case is a defective pump, cracked pump housing reducing the clamping pressure of all the clutch plates.

Hope this helps.
Frank

Thanks for the replies guys.

I took it into see my Porsche spcialist who took it out for a spin and said he thought the transmissions would benefit from a fluid and filter changes. He's also going to check it for any leaks etc. I will update you later as it goes in tomorrow for the work.

Cheers

Just collected my car from the mechanics. He'd replaced the trans oil and filter for me. Said it was a little low and I expect the fluid/filter would have needed a change by 50k.

He said there was what looked like a small leak from the back of the box where it connects to the 4WD system. My knowledge is weak so apologies I can't go into more technical detail on it. Apparently Porsche don't replace the gasket and owuld advise a new box!!! I'm going to stick a clean bit of board under the box for the next couple of nights in an attempt to gauge how much of a leak this leak is!!! Lets hope it's nothing!!!

Back to my problems with the box, I've just taken the car for a drive and it feels much better which is positive. Changes feel better, changedowns feel like they should and no over revving between up changes. Generally car feels better so happy. Just need to keep an eye on it now and hope it's not a major problem in the making.

Thanks for your advice people

you can get almost all the gaskets from mercedes... thats who makes the box... and if not you can always have a shop make the gasket.. thats what my shop had to do on mine a few years back... or maybe contact renntech they rebuild our transmission boxes.. maybe they sell a gasket kit..?
