If there is ONE universal truth about car forums, it is that people get burned out on "oil threads"....

That is not to say there is no merit with castrol magnatec, it may be great, or new, or whatever...but the topic of oil is so flogged that many will simply pass this by.

thanks, i know of the burn outon the oil threads, been following them and reading up, and not having seen the magnatec mentioned thought i'd ask, being in germany, and not finding m1tdt, and having the notorious ims(or whatever) noise, am trying to figure out what oil to use to make 'er last long as possible...with this clicking/clacking goin on back there, i am afriad to get the boost up and really enjoy the car for fear of total destruction of said motor, but thanks for your reply,, kk

There's some good basic reading at "Bob is the Oil Guy" website.

From what I've read in several different places, EPA has mandated lowering ZDDP because ZDDP that gets into the exhaust stream poisons the cats. SM rated oils have less ZDDP than SF rated oils did.

Some specialty oils, like motorcycle oils, because motorcycles don't have roller lifters and run over 10K rpm, have more of this additive.

You can buy a ZDDP additive. ZDDP prevents galling/metal-to-metal wear.

Viscosity is NOT the only issue with oils for these engines.

Here's a good paper summarizing the issues:

http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Corvair_oil.pdf

It's written to address the issue of flat-tappets in Corvair engines, a tough metal-on-metal challenge for any oil.
