2004 996 Turbo CPO ECU scan question.
2004 996 Turbo CPO ECU scan question.
Good morning everyone. I'm contemplating buying a 2004 996 turbo CPO'd from an authorized dealer. Price is $56,500. The ECU scan shows total operating hours of 835.3 hours and shows 2106 range 1 over revs at 833.8 hours and 230 range 2 at 833.3 hours. Miles are just shy of 30k.
What do you guys think: buy or run away according to these scan results?
Thanks for the help.

Not outrageous... but quite recent. Sounds like that car's been through some aggressive test drives as of late - maybe a missed shift, too... hard to say.
Wow they just had a test driver gun it. But range 1 and 2 no biggie it usually just means someone got surprised by how fast they got into the revlimiter and sat too long before finding the clutch and next gear. If higher ranges than 1 or 2 it's a downshift overrev which is definitely a walk away b/c the valvetrain gets damaged easily from unloaded overrevs.
Just as earlier poster says, make sure it's mentioned in the CPO and that the CPO is valid.

^^ Yes, I have still have it. Don't like to deal with the hassle of selling so I have kept it so far. Don't know if I'll sell it or if I'll keep it in addition to any Turbo I may buy. I also really like it a lot. Best car I've ever had!

I am under the impression that it has been while on the dealer's inventory, maybe on a test drive.
The only concern I would have is with my local dealer, to see if they would honor the CPO on this car being serviced here, because I live in Central Florida and won't be servicing there for the most part.

The car is at a very well-known franchised Porsche dealer and it's CPO'd to whomever buys it next. I already have a copy of the ECU scan with today's date so, if I buy it within the next few days, it would be post ECU scan so those over revs cannot attributed to me.

i'm fairly ( am ) certain you can have your ( cpo ) warrantied work done by any authorized pcar dealership. regardless of geography. good luck with it.

People fail to understand that Porsche of north America (PCNA) pays the warranty- NOT the dealership!
If PCNA decides to not cover damage due to recent over-revs, even if they happened prior to your purchase, you will have to ask the dealer to cover it. If they say no, then you spend $40k in a lawsuit against the dealer. If the servicing dealer is not the 'cpoing' dealer, I cannot see any reason they'd help.
There is no such thing as 'well known and respected enough' porsche dealer to not be concerned. When the fit hits the shan, and PCNA isn't picking up the tab, will they be trustworthy? When another dealer calls them and asks "wanna pay us for this rebuild?"
I can think of some language you could ask the selling dealer to agree with, but then you have to go after them if there are issues.
I am concerned that the last type 2(s) were two hours ago...way too recent. I wonder if they'd do a compression and leakdown to be sure there were no issues? Or will they personally warrant the car in the even PCNA refuses?

so, another way to look at it might be, that you're not "putting yourself in a bad position" at all! but rather practicing due diligence, and buying an 8 year old screamingly fast car, with a two year factory bumper to bumper warranty!
i'd take that gamble ( again ).
ps. those overrev numbers while recent and probably, as others have said, resulatant from recent joy riders, are not something i would be concerned with. they are too few. remember the whole point of a cpo is that they certify it to be in excellent mechanical condition and free from ( noticeable or known ) defect and all other stuff to be within factory spec(s). again, good luck. go for it!
