Mobile 1 or Castrol Edge Formula RX 10W-60

Last year at my service my Porsche tuner filled my car with Castrol. I was shocked but then he told me that once cars are tuned above 500bhp Mobile 1 is no longer “a good” oil. Hm. He is German tuner who builds turbos for RUF, so credibility is high. Well I drove 10K kilometres and all is fine. I am wondering what I should do at my next oil change - next week. Stick to his advice? What do you guys say?

I ran Castrol in my S4 and liked it. Can't say for the 996TT. I am currently running Shell Rotella T6 5w40 diesel oil and so far so good. I did some research and the zinc protectant additives are sopposedly higher than the Mobile 1 turbo diesel. The one thing I am noticing so far is my oil pressure is a little higher with the Rotella. When I had my S4 I stoppped using Mobile 1 all together because my valvetrain noise was higher with it. And when I switched to the same grade oil but castrol instead all my valvetrain noise stopped. The one fact to consider is the formula for Mobile has changed since the 996TT engine was tested due to stricter emission standards. The diesel oil has not been required to change these formulas. The thing I notice with the mobile 1 oils is it breaks down really quick. The was you can tell is by listening to your car the first week of the oil change. The chain noise is not quite as noisy, but after the first week the noise goes back to normal. I am a week into this oil change and the noise is still not as loud as the worn down mobile 1, so we will see. The real test would be to do a blackstone test and run a series of tests to tell which oil is better.

There's a lot of discussion over here about that as well. I was always a Castrol Man . Used to use RS but now apparently its Edge.
However there are a lot of reports from good tuners over here that are saying Edge becomes unstable when it get too hot, its sheer ability is vastly reduced . All i know is we are told its bad for Big HP cars but more so on very high revving engines.
TBH i find it a little disheartening news as I have always used RS through my time rallying Cosworth's
It would be nice to get a clearer and more definitive answer to this very question of yours.

I'm still using Mobil 1 5W/40 but the question you have asked makes me thing about it all over again.
It will be interesting to see what others have to say about it.

Protomotive uses 20w50 Valvoline VR1. That ought to get some people fired up, it seems oil is the most sensitive topic, we all care about our cars, and everyone wants to feel they are doing what best for their car.

I think changing the oil frequently every 3-5k is most important, IMO, most of the "popular" oils discussed here are going to provide protection at that change interval, especially on the street. If you track the car, obviously shorter change intervals is in the cards.

Weight seems too thick. Castro is better than Mobil but i would use 0w40 0r 5w40.

Protomotive use of 20-50 seems counter to what most engine builders advise... just too thick.

Mobil 1 5-50 is a fine oil, IMO very nice for high temps driving.

This "marketing dollar drive" concept of "castrol" or "mobil" is really strange. It almost sounds like people's brand loyalty to a cigarette!

Each oil should be evaluated on its own specific merits, for a specific engine and a specific driving patter...any other generalization has no merit.

IMO

This thread surprises me that there is not a more definitive answer to what the best motor oil brand and weight is for our cars. What is the measure of one versus the other? How does anyone know which is better, short of a catastrophic failure or obvious premature wear with one compared to another? If it's just opinion based on tribal lore, then we may as well run anything off the shelf.

Everytime i drain mobil 1, it comes out dark brown. Castro is lighter. That's all the proof I need.

Everything you ever wanted to know about motor oil.

I wouldn't run anything less than a 40wt and would probably run 10w50 or 10w60, Redline, Motul, Castrol TWS 10w60 all have high ZDDP content and offer ester based synthetics that are great for high horsepower turbo cars. Keep in mind that I am in Houston and don't have to deal with cold temperatures.

Hi,Really nothing.......I have had engine oil analyzed from my motorcycles competition engines,,,,,that is no proof of protection level in the oil,,,Its the way the detergent package works in street engines...Most race oils do not have detergent packages in them...
