Gearbox whine

I have a slight whine (more like belt whine) in 6th gear. I emphasise slight and I only hear it in 6th. I know by now that most slight noises in our cars are there just in order we panic rather than indicating an actual problem or a fault.

Do you guys get it?

Huh mine is much less noisy. So your problem started in 6th? How long till you got it in all gears? How much did spl charge you for fix? Pm if you like. Thanks.

It started in 5th and 6th in my car too. First it was barely noticeable, in fact nobody seemed to hear that apart from me. Then it started to be more obvious and later I could hear that starting from 3rd gear and pretty lous as you can see in my vids.

I think it took +/- 2 weeks of DD for it to develop more evident noise.

One thing though - if you think this is the case in your car too - do not wait - better not to have all the shredded pieces floating around the box!

I got great price from my mechanic (SKN Poland) and I also found one of the bearings for way less than Porsche asked (the other one surprisingly turned out to be cheaper when bought from Porsche).

Not sure if you'd like to take the car all the way to Poland to have it fixed but if you consider it - PM me for details. Way cheaper than in UK for sure.

Not sure our symptoms are the same. My 6th is whining the same for the past 3000 miles. Hm.

So I guess the only way is to wait and see if it changes over time.

I would take it to a specialist and have it properly inspected. It could be as simple as a wheel bearing. But if it's inside the gearbox, the more miles you put on it, the more expensive it gets.

Lets say, for example, that it's the main pinion bearing. Fix it early and it's a $500 bearing and labor. Leave it for a few thousand miles, your ring and pinion eats itself and your bill just increased by $3000.

This is not the sort of thing that a "I guess I'll just wait and see what happens" approach serves you well. And it's not something easily diagnosed on the internet. Get the car to a professional ASAP!!!

Change the oil in the transmission and inspect the crud that will be on the magnetic plug. You will pull it out and go holly crap my transmission is toast. But take a deep breath and get the metal crud off the plug and spread it out on a clean paper towel. If it all pretty much spreads out to look like a gray smear that is good. If there are chunks of actual metal then you need to look into it further. Save the paper towel and take it to a reliable Indy and get their opinion

One more note about transmission whine. I installed the 964 RS rubber motor mounts. Then about a month later put my stock muffler back on, went for a drive and thought my transmission was starting to go because of the trany noise. Whine in all gears. Did the trans fluid change and all looked good. 30K miles later and it is still the same. So motor mounts can cause a significant amount of trany whine to get into the drivers compartment especially when you can hear it so well with a quiet exhaust.

Yes. Changing to solid or semi solid mounts adds alot of noise inside. You also seem to notice the lash when the car comes on/off throttle. My car sounds mechanical and has for almost 40k, no issues.

while it is true that motor mounts ( semi's or solids ) transmit a significant amount of additional "drivetrain nvh" into the cabin as compared to the oem's. neither i nor anyone else i have known with these cars has confused that "noise" with a bearing(s) failing in the transmission. that noise brings new meaning the word "harsh".

once you have heard that once? it is ( was to me ) instantly recognizable as "internal", rather than mere drivetrain noise.

if anyone ever hears whining from the trans. don't ever wait for it to improve while continuing to drive the car. it ain't gonna happen.

For me its clearly a whistlement. Very strange it appears only in 6th gear, in a small range of RPM.( 2500/4000 RPM)

i would suspect a pinion bearing long before i would suspect 6th was going "bad". 6th is the least used gear.

if you catch it early enough? it's just open the box and r&r the pinion bearing(s). cheapest trans refresh possible on the m96/g50.

good luck.
