Once, I attained 500 rwhp I switched from Mobil 0-40 to Swepco 15-40. Swepco is 100% synthetic and the 15-40 is better for a racing output motor. Now, I would not use this oil in areas experiencing temperatures below 33 degrees F.

cjv...

Could you enlighten me why the change to 15w-40? I always thought for warmer climates such as So. Cal, we didn't need such a thin oil like 0w-40. I've also thought about using a little thicker oil such as 15w-40.

I heard it's because of the variable valve system in our cars (variocam, i think) that requires such a thin oil weight. True???

Chris,

0-40 is not the best oil for a highly modified motor. By the same token highly modified motors are usually not run in freezing areas. The Porsche is designed to run in all conditions therefore
0-40 oil.

Thanks cjv...

Based on your experiences, have you found 15w-40 to work best for you? My car doesn't see any temperatures below 60F...would the change to 15w-40 be a good idea?

Thanks in advance!

Ken,

In NJ you can purchase 100+ octane at a few stations they are few and far between though. One place is located IIRC on either RT4 or 46 in Fort Lee. There is also a location in Raritan, which took me close to 1 hour to find as it is a small station. When all else fails you can usually pick some up at the closest race track.
