Once, I attained 500 rwhp I switched from Mobil 0-40 to Swepco 15-40. Swepco is 100% synthetic and the 15-40 is better for a racing output motor. Now, I would not use this oil in areas experiencing temperatures below 33 degrees F.

Could you enlighten me why the change to 15w-40? I always thought for warmer climates such as So. Cal, we didn't need such a thin oil like 0w-40. I've also thought about using a little thicker oil such as 15w-40.

I heard it's because of the variable valve system in our cars (variocam, i think) that requires such a thin oil weight. True???

0-40 is not the best oil for a highly modified motor. By the same token highly modified motors are usually not run in freezing areas. The Porsche is designed to run in all conditions therefore
0-40 oil.

Based on your experiences, have you found 15w-40 to work best for you? My car doesn't see any temperatures below 60F...would the change to 15w-40 be a good idea?

Ken,

In NJ you can purchase 100+ octane at a few stations they are few and far between though. One place is located IIRC on either RT4 or 46 in Fort Lee. There is also a location in Raritan, which took me close to 1 hour to find as it is a small station. When all else fails you can usually pick some up at the closest race track.

Have any of you tried mixing with Toluene? pretty clean as far as i've read and been told.
