Viper vs Turbo another view
I have been shopping around for the last fe months for a TT and found a nice 2002 with low mileage - good news is I found one - bad - is there is a 2003 Viper with 3,000 miles sitting right next to it on the lot with a sticker $22,000 less. It hard not to consider the Viper altenative...
I have et to drive a Viper but wanted to throw this out on the baord to get some opinions... I am a huge Porsche fan but the power and cost savings of the Viper is very attrative, not to mention the torque of 500 ci.
The car would be used as a second car but will be drive in NY. As I am sure some of you know the roads are not the best. I currently have a 2002 C2 which has held up nicely but will the Viper hold up as well? I certainly dont want a rattle box within a year. I figure I will put 4,000 to 6,000 miles on either a year.
Both cars are at Porsche of Hungtington.
Any thoughts?

2 different cars, drive them both first. I'd say the TT in stock form is a lot more civil. I wouldn't consider the Viper an ideal commuter car.

I looked at the Viper as well. I realized that I wanted to really drive the car, not Sat. night or Sunday afternoon for an hour or so. Viper is a great car, it's purpose is very narrow or specific. I ended up with the Turbo and 35,000 plus miles later, no question for me I made the right choice (this is not my daily driver though). With Stage four I get the muscle car, and a driver's car, my road trip car, as well.
drive them both and i think that you will find that the viper is like a hot rod. fun for a while but not very refined. same with the corvette. i am thinking about buying a C6 convertible and keep realizing that you get what you pay for. great cars but.......... Everytime i drive my TT, i have a huge smile on my face and think that it is the best car in the world..
The Turbo is really a GT - Viper is a hot rod. As a second car the Viper might work well, but it's not a Porsche. Are you more interested in sheer driving fun, or does appearance matter to you?
The P-car is classier in my opinion - if I were taking my gf out to dinner, I'd rather do it in a Turbo. But if I just wanted a car to mod and tear up the track or street, the Viper would be a nice choice. They really are different cars though, just go drive both extensively...

I am car nut as I am sure everyone on this board is and can certainly appreciate the attributes of both automobiles. While the Porsche does exude a higher level of, for the lack of a better word, "class", That is not what intrigues me about the Porsche. They both are quite exotic in my eyes. What the Porsche does for me is the level of detail, refinement and all around performance and driveability. And yes, it does turn heads. But both cars will.
If the difference in cost was $10,000 it wouldnt be a question without even driving the Viper - Turbo all the way... But $22,000 makes me stop and think...
I can get the viper and a second daily driver for that money.
Tough decision. I guess it will come down to driving the Viper. But my fear is driving the car will only further intrigue me without have a sense of long term drivability. After all the Viper is sitting on a Porsche lot which means someone traded it in for, i am guessing, a Turbo. I just dont want to be dissappointed long term with my decision.

I love both cars and they are very different. The viper is much more raw as people say, but that has its appeal. The SRT-10 is a much better car than the previous vipers - better looking, better handling, better interior, better engine, better brakes. In a dry climate, it can be driven daily. To me, it is more exciting to drive than the turbo - more of a race car feel. It is, however, sig. less comfortable just putting around town. It is just as fast, handles just as well and stops better than a stock turbo. It all boils down to what you want and like. Do drive the viper.... I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I did and I bought one! Something about being able to hang your rear out at will kind of makes me happy.....
