996tt guys... what are you getting next ?
#46
I've always looked at the 997tt as the younger sister of the 996tt; almost identical, just younger. So, is it an upgrade? I don't think so.

Interesting to read some of the choices. I see a lot of guys putting down the GTR, which is quite a different driving experience than the 996TT. I wonder how many have driven the GTR, as when doing so, it becomes quickly evident that much of the driving fun (IMO) has been removed. Turning a quick number does not necessarily equate to fun and/or excitement. Many manufacturers are in the process of removing some of the driving excitement, experience and required skill in their newer models in the hunt for better numbers. Personally, I have to experience the car, first hand (drive it a bit) before I can buy in. Don't get me wrong, the GTR is a remarkable machine. Saying it is not after driving one would simply be lying. It all comes down to what you seek (the numbers, the feel, the challenge, etc..). Just my .02

Exactly.. Just run a few laps with a Go cart, your backside a few inches of the deck with no ( little) protection, it will show you that you can have a huge bundle of fun at 50 miles an hour.. The GTR is a big and heavy car and isolates you from all of that. I am afraid I also thinking the Panamera has the same issue, they are solving a problem that I do not want them to take away from me. It's called DRIVING a car!!

I am in the boat of keeping the car for quite a while because I personally do not see it becoming too outdated too soon. Especially with the way Porsche "upgrades" their body styles and engines etc...to me it is not much of a difference that makes it a trade up. Again this is just to me personally and I respect other's opinions who feel differently.
For me personally the only "upgrade" I can think of would be a GT2 RS
Not happening anytime soon so I will be content.

Since I don't see anyone dreaming of horses, I added a 2009 Ferrari Scuderia to my 996 GT2 and 360 Spider:

Car is going to Esoteric Detail in Ohio for full detail, and clear bra. Studio 47 will be doing a full fluid change and adding an RSC Tuning Veloce exhaust.

Here's my thinking with regards to the 997TT being an upgrade.....
I believe the 997 have superior technology and build quality when compared to the 996
As far as performance and economy it is also a better performer
HOWEVER
I see the 996 as the car to own for the following reason.....
The 996 is the pioneer, it's the first of the new generation
The 996 is the car that started to beat the new path for Porsche
The 997 has built on this, but that's all
The 997 is certainly the 'better' car, but it's 'just' a newer version
Nothing special and nothing important at all
Once the next turbo comes out that will be the 'better' car
So where does that leave the 997?
The 997 will no longer be the newest version - and that's all it has going for it at the moment
Once the new turbo is released the 997 will be knocked from it's pedestal as it will now be an 'inferior' car
So, what would that do to the 996 then?
Well, the 996 will always be the pioneer
Regardless of how many new versions of the turbo are released, the 996 will always be the one that started the new trend
When I bought my car I was looking at 997TT, 996TT, and 993TT
I discarded the 997 due to the above reasons
The only reason to buy it was because it was new
The problem with that reasoning is that it won't always be new
So, buying it for just that reason wasn't good enough for me
This left me with either the 996TT or the 993TT
The 993TT has everything going for it that the 996TT does
Where as the 996 is the pioneer, the 993 is the end of an era
The 996 or the 993 will therefore always be a special car (in my eyes)
To summarise, yes the 997TT is the newer and more polished car when compared to the 996TT, but in my eyes that doesn't make it special like the 996
Ok guys, my flame suit is on, let's have it
