High Revs

Hey guys,

I installed a cargraphic exhaust on my 03 Gt2 the other day. I took it out for 30 minutes then let my cousin rev it up in my garage so I could hear how it sounds. He conservatively revved it for about 10 seconds then revved it to 8000 rpm for probably 3 seconds!

I instantly yelled at him and got it back to idle. It has a FVD tune on it which states a rev limiter of 7000 rpm. I wonder why it didn't limit it? Maybe bc it was in neutral with no load on the engine. I took it back out and it sounds/drives fine hitting full boost at 1.1 bar.

I researched range 1 and 2 over revs but this wasn't a mis shift or driving redline. My car has 4000 miles on it with oil changes every year.

Is this anything to worry about?? I just got a little paranoid

I dont think so,Since you didnt bend your valves because of valve float....Most likely since it wasnt under load with that fast high RPM ,the tach probably spun up so fast that it said that RPM but the motor actually didnt hit that high...Get some sleep now..lol...

This might be a noob question but please humor me. I have never missed a shift but I have hit the limiter under load while driving. I believe that this is counted as on over rev, but I thought that the engine is protected bc it can safely rev higher than the limiter but it kicks in before any damage can occur. Is this accurate?

Yes you are pretty much right.,,Its the down shift over revs that are killers...Hitting the stock rev limiter with a factory tune or a good after market flash should not do any damage.....

There are some that have documented type 2s bouncing off the limiter in 1st (search).
