My First Porsche - Good Story

Hey all, finally found a 996 that I liked and checked out. What a blast to drive, when those turbos kick in WOW!!! Bought it from a guy in CA, had it delivered to a rest stop near my house. Unfortunately it snowed the night before. 2002 w/ 22,000 miles

Funny story, had it delivered and went for a cruze. After about 5 minutes the check engine light come on. I was like WTF, I've only had this for a half hour. Took it home and searched for a local indy mechanic, it was a little tough on Sat afternoon. I'm totally freaked, wondering what I just did with my money. Anyway took it in and the guy comes back looking a weird and asked if I put gas in it. Told him no, I only drove it about 20 minutes. He kind of laughs and lets me know that whoever messed with the gas cap last didn't close it all the way. Must have been the delivery truck. Anyway it get's better. Relieved to hear the news I go for another cruze. Need to get gas so I stop at a station, but the gas won't go in. After about a 10th of a gallon the hose shuts off and everything spits out. After pouring $8 worth of gas on the ground I go to another station, same thing. I'm all WTF again. Go to a third station and its the same, takes me a half hour to put 3 gallons in it to get home. Not sure if this was related to cap not being sealed, but went the next day and no problems.

In the, what a awesome car. Really smooth, really fast!!!!!

I haven't had a problem filling up except it shuts off at 3/4 full. I live in Oregon and we don't pump our own gas. So it's kind of a pain in the *** to tell them every time that it's not full yet.

Try putting the handle in the 12 o'clock position when filling

One thing I did when I fill my gas is to lift the gas gun tail a bit and hold it until the tank is fully filled. It take some time to get used to.
I heard it was a common problem due to the gas tank design.

Holding the nozzle at a 90 degree angle always works for me. So, if your standard position of filling a normal car works out to 6 o'clock, try holding the handle at 9 o'clock, with the bottom of the nozzle facing your leg (when you're standing slightly to the left of the actual gas door). Best wishes, and post up some pictures of your new car!

Yeah you will get it. 9 o'clock tip works well. Also engine light sometimes comes on because of the gas cap. If you always click it twice lets say the contact on the second click will start playing up. People tend to always turn and click to their preferred pattern and keep it the same. This will start giving you engine light error. If this happens disconnect battery reconnect and engine light will go out. I always click one, two, three and four times altering between the clicks every time I fill up to prevent this fault. Since I am doing this I no longer get engine check light.

Issue with your gas not going in is related to a vacuum issue. I had the same issue occur with me.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Allen

Thanks all for you tips on getting gas. I haven't had a problem putting gas in since that first day.

Still trying to figure out how to post pics. I created a photobucket account but when I try to link the website, the picture wont come up.

Two pretty different cars. The C6 has more torque and exhaust from a V8 sounds much deeper, more rumble. The the 911 is much smoother, tighter and turbos are a blast. Both cars are a lot of fun, glad I got a Porsche!!!!

I'll post a pic up here someday

+1 hold it at a 90 degree angle. My evap canister got flooded but was replaced under the emissions warranty. It's a common problem.

Don't feel to bad, when I decided to do an oil change on my first 78 911 a crawled under the car with my Pep Boys 6 quart drain pan and took the oil plug out of the engine and only about half quart of oil came out. I called my buddy who directed my to another plug under the dry sump tank. That seem to work but a bit too well as I watched the oil overflow the drain pan and run down my parents driveway. I had lots of splaining to do. Live and learn.

Just curious. Why the derogatory comment? I like and respect both cars. Why the need to demean a pretty darn cool car?
