That is a tough one, but I think I would go with the 2001. Less miles, less money, and a tune will easily make it a beast. $18K can go a long way with mods and repairs.

For a performance car buy the first
For higher resale value buy the second

on the '05, be sure to take a close look at the brakes... It would suck to spend all that money on a used car, only to spend a bunch more on pads and rotors....

Get the 01 as long as it does not have 2nd gear pop out your farther ahead, Spend 4k on a Tune, exhaust and a good tune up and you have a great/fun car

If it is just a glove box and 30hp, it would have been an easier call. To me, it is an tough pick; it will depend on how much money I have to make the call.

I have a 2001 and like mine. I must say that for an 05 with PCCB, sport seats, x50 and a fairly rare interior color that seems average. I would buy the 2001, but the price on the 05 is fair IMHO.

Agreed. Also check to make sure of any sign of paint work and or damage to either one. I also like to buy from private owners over dealers as you can get a sense of how the car was taken care of.

+1 on the 01. Even though a complete history for the past 5 years, get a PPI.

That's a tough one -- although it would have been more accurate to say $18K for PCCB and more HP. If you want them, the PCCB brakes are an expensive option. From a pure specs perspective, it seems that the '01 makes the most sense. However, there's a pretty big gap in time between '01 and '05. Many components could have aged a bit in that extra 4 years and you might have to do more maintenance earlier for the '01. Also, since the '01 was the first year for the 996TT, it would be interesting to know if Porsche had fixed some things by the time they got to '05 that might not show up on an options/spec sheet.

I'd go with the 2001 I don't think you'd lose much money on it even putting 20k miles on it.

Shameless plug. How about an '02 GT2 with 8400 miles and some awesome upgrades by Protomotive.

I'd go for the 2005 and bargain the hell out of it ; I have the sports seats and PCCB, they are nice to have IMO.

2005 Turbo S, pull the PPCB brakes and replace that with steel, then resell the PCCB's. Remember the 996T-X50 is about 30 HP more than the standard T. That option was 18K more when new. I do like the glovebox. I have one :-) . Also as already suggested, the car is 4 years younger.. so potentially less repairs in the next few years... It's only money... we'll make some more.

Haha!

Here's a question... Does the S come with K24s or K16s? If K24s, does it also come with the other X50 type upgrades - slightly better intercoolers, better oil pump, etc? I don't know much at all about the '05 S model.

I'm sure you'd be super happy with either one... Do you alrady otherwise have plans for that $18k if you didn't end up spending it?
