My TT is spooked: Windows open magically!

My TT does a spooky thing: From time to time it turns on the interior light and lowers the windows completely. I simply drive around in it and *dang* interior light turns on and windows open all the way down.

While the windows are going down, I can't stop them from doing that by pressing the "window-up" button. I can only close the windows again, once they've opened completely.

I cannot turn off the interior light neither, unless I open the door quite a little and close it again. Then the lamp dims out on its own.

Okay... this was spooky enough, but it only happened rarely. Now this morning I got down to my TT and saw to my surprise, that the windows were open. i.e. that the car opens up itself and lowers the windows.

Has anyone ever heard about this paranormal phenomenon? I got the car to the garage today, but I wonder whether they will be able to find the bug.

Is your car a cab or coupe? Mercedes cars with retractable hardtops have had this problem. (Only the windows, not dome light problem.) The problem with that, was the fitment of the window to the rubber frame, maybe caused by warping of rubber or an improperly aligned roof top putting pressure on the window frame. Supposedly, if the fit is wrong, a safety mechanism activates when it thinks a finger or an arm is caught between window and frame, causing the window to lower. I'm thinking maybe prolonged heat (or a factory fault) warped the rubber to cause this. However, since it seems to occur in conjunction with the light problem, I'm more inclined to believe its an electrical glitch. Maybe the puter needs to be reset? Good luck with it, I imagine its a very annoying problem.

It's a coupe... and yea, for some reason I also thought that this would be a typical tech malfunction for a cabriolet (especially with the auto-lowering windows). I had the hope that someone from the 6speed community had this problem before, but it seems that I am the pioneer of spooked TTs.

It's the spirit of Dr. Porsche.

This used to happen on early 996's. I thought it was fixed before the TT came out.

There's a feature on cabriolets where you can lower all windows and put down the top by holding the key in the door lock in the unlocked position. (I'm not sure if coupes work similarly.) Perhaps you have an electrical short in the door lock causing this to happen?

i had an 89' Lotus Esprit that would lower both driver and passenger windows on its very own. Usually when it was raining or below 18 degrees!! Those british sure do have a sense of humor!

The car is at Porsche atm. I think that I'll get it back on Tuesday (hopefully). I'll let you know what the bug was.
