differences in throw out bearings, Question inside.

I finally got around to installing my throw out bearing tonight. i have had the tranny out for about a month just now found time to mess with it.

Left the shop just now scratching my head....Well i took the clutch out and remoed the Sachs throw out bearing. I was just about to put the other Sachs bearing in when i noticed the "ears" are much shorter in hieght than what came out of the car.

I compared part numbers from the original to the new bearing i got. The original bearing is a Sachs part number: (doh didnt write that number down and i am home now, will edit post in the morning) And the replacement bearing (shorter) :3151 000 464. When you run that number it comes up as a 911 turbo throw out bearing where as the original comes up as a 911 with no notes as to what else it cross refferences to ( i am using speed dial, I know some of you know what that is ;-) )

The clutch in the car is a sachs/clutchmasters and a rss L/W flywheel. ttboost may have to chime in on the exact make of the flywheel

Well, it seems i will just get the longer eared version...How can i be sure thats what i need? The ears did break off of my current bearing, was the height the issue all along? So...Which do i use short or longer version? Thanks in advanced --Rob

Their are two different throw out bearings for the 996TT/GT2/GT3 series cars. The 996TT, GT2 and GT3(w/ DMFW) comes with the the shorter ear THrow out bearing. The cars with the RS LWFW (or single mass flywheel) uses the long ear throw outs. The reason is because of the distance the flywheel is from the fork. The RS style flywheels are not as tall and space the throw out bearing further away from the fork which is why the longer ears are needed. Chances are the RSS flywheel is the same style as the RS meaning it needs the RS style Throw out bearing, which is actually a 944 part. Here is a picture for reference.

the original bearing was the taller version, I must have the appropriate guide tube to begin with. THey don't go bad do they?

Check out my post in the gt2 slave thread. The longer T/O bearing ear length may require you to make a longer slave rod.

Guide tubes do not really go bad. Here are the parts needed for the RS type Throw out bearing:

Clutch guide tube: 950 116 813 30
Guide tube screws: 900 270 055 02 (2 ea)
Throw out bearing: 944 116 080 01

If your flywheel/clutch setup is supposed to have the RS style Throw Out Bearing, you will want to fix that soon. Otherwise the clutch may not be fully releasing and may start slipping. Check the old TO bearing part number and see if it is the above part number.

If you had the right guide tube you wouldn't have been able to fit the smaller throw out bearing, it has a smaller diameter.
