996tt tiptronics problem
996tt tiptronics problem
Hello.
I own a MY2002 996tt, I purchased it recently, only driven around 3K miles, mileage is around 45K.
About 2 weeks ago after a 5-6hrs aggressive drive I was parking the car, I left for a few seconds leaving the engine running and selector in P, when I returned, put in D and the gear would not engage. The dash read "2nd gear", but the car did not move. I tried to use tiptronics buttons but they were not working. I moved the selector around and got it to work after I put in R. Then the gearbox worked as usual, I parked the car, thought it was an electronics glitch and forgot about it.
I drove the car fine every day for 2 weeks, but yesterday, again on the parking lot the same thing happened when maneuvering. This time R would not engage and after that D either. Moved selector around, got it to work. But after this fail I noticed the car would jerk when I put either R or D. I parked and left and haven't used the car since. This also happened after a 6hrs aggressive drive, no problems on the street whatsoever.
This is an underground parking, I have to drive very slowly on a spiral incline for around 5-7 miniutes. Could this be causing the problem somehow? There are no fluid leaks seen.
Should I replace the fluid and filter and see if it helps? Or is it a transmission fail?
Anyone ever experienced anything like that? Please...
Really-really upset about this...

Well, yes, it was tuned by EDO Competition of Germany. But it's engine only: ECU firmware, exhaust / catalyzers, turbos. Up to 530 hp. Not really a hell
of a tune to kill the tiptronics, provided it's a X50.

Sounds like front pump loss of prime. You can confirm by raising the eng. rpm next time it happens and see if the car starts to creep a bit.If so its an internal issue.Should have some codes in the tcm regardless and would be a good idea to get it checked out soon along w/ a proper fluid level ck
Well, the last time it happened, the gear would not engage at all, not like it was sliding. I would put it to "R", but the dash would read "2" which it normally does not when reverse gear is actually engaged. Looks like it's just staying in neutral and only happens after selector moved, never while driving. Are you saying if I gave it more RPM it would change from neutral to reverse?

Maybe the gear selector cable is loose. Mine came off one time and it would not go into gear.
OK, no, here's what's happening. There are two lines of lights: on the left: 1,2,3,4,5,6; on the right: P, R, N, D, M. When I move the selector, the light on the right do change, however, on the left always "2" is shown. So, it's not the cable, unless the position sensor is on the selector itself.
This happened to one of my other cars (good old US made). There were particles in the gearbox that came off from actual gears. I couldn't shift into gears sometimes. The tranny was replaced. Hope it is not the same case for you.
The 2 indication usually means the trans is in "limp" mode, meaning only 2nd gear is being used.Supposedly just to get you home.Raising the rpm makes the front pump (main ) turn faster increasing fluid pressure to the clutch packs.Loss of prime means no fluid in the pump to compress and actuate the clutch packs.Heat and a good drive tends to aerate the fluid, coupled with low fluid or internal damage could be your cause.Rec. getting it to a shop for proper diag
It does not sound like it is going into limp mode. It will flash in 2 and indicate a fault in the center display just like a CEL. +1 to bringing it in for diag. you dont want the trans to eat itself up!
