Bad Battery leads to $3k in damage
I went to www.porscheoemparts.com and it was $1k and went to Pelican and it was $355. I'm gonna do some donuts in that damn Boxster and then have date night in the passenger seat.
For the price of the alternator I believe I could have booked the Russian Womens Gymnastics Squad for the night. Soooo painful... i have now hit autoatlanta, pelicanparts etc. and can't find an alternator over $450. Expensive lesson but done, noted and learned from.
Talk to the stealership, see what they say about the price. If they say it was fair then ask them if they really want you as a repeated customer.
Boxer or not, I would be happy in a rental Corolla and $1000 to the good.

Hardest part is I called 3 dealers as I was in area where I had no direct connections(independents) and all 3 quoted me exact same price..
It happens. Unfortunately, it usually happens when people are in need. I would try to talk to the manager. You were a happy customer, they should try to keep you happy if they want return business. Then again, Boxster rentals in LA are about $500 a day.
For the benefit of others, my mechanic recommended that I have my defective rebuilt, so I found a shop locally that will rebuild alternators for $150. Not bad and not a difficult repair if the little shop isn't great. I had my starter rebuilt for $135.

Mine went bad last yr. I got one at auto zone for 280. The voltage is right at 14. My father took the original one put new bearings in it and fixed the voltage regulator. That unit is on the shelf now. Usaly a diode just goes out on the voltage regulator.
Yea i was going to change the Voltage Regulator. But i figured since i had it out anyways, why put a 8 year old Alternator back in the car...
but glad your car is ok, and that you made it out of compton to tell the tale

Mines got probs too , first I thought it was the alternator but looks like battery too as wont charge over 12v, so I suspect the battery killed the alternator. I have found the Bosch part number for the regulator which screws on the back of the alternator and I have been told this is the "normal" fault with alternators.
Bosch part F-00M-145-350 translates to Porsche number 000-043-206-37
Also this link is good if you want to DIY the replacement as the pics and step by step guide seem thorough.

porsche battery is pretty gay
get yourself a die hard gold for $200 with full replacement for 3 years or a walmart one for $70!
dealers know when to over charge you. i guess better to pay up than dealing with a ruined trip. this is one of the reasons i prefer to get a rental car when going long distance.
