996 ssk

Ebay has a bunch of what appears to be B&M SSK knock offs. Has anyone tried one of these? If so, any issues? They can be had for like $50.

I wouldn't trust a $50 ssk when the normal retail price is 5 times that. They have to be cutting corners somewhere to offer it for that price.

The B&M shifter is not considered the best choice, so a knock has to be even worse. PCNA parts almost always work better.

There are enough variations in the non knock off SSKs (as reported here, some end up more notchy or smooth than others) that I wouldn't trust a knock off of an aftermarket part (if that a knock off of a knock off? ). Just as a data point, I'm happy with the OEM 997 SSK that I had installed. Of course, for $50, you might just be risking your labor and time if it doesn't work out.

Hi,Why would you take the chance and put a $50 shifter in this type of car, especially a knock off part that connects you with the driving experience?

Agreed. There are some things that I just wouldn't go cheap on. Those items that connect me to the car, and those items that connect the car to the road (e.g. tires).

If you can do the install yourself, $50 isn't much of a risk.

Unfortunately these cars are no longer six figure cars (basically the same cost as a new 350Z or Mustang Boss 302). Given this, it will get harder and harder for people to justify the cost of premium parts (with the Porsche tax).

Later, Steve
