Do you have a ballpark figure of what it would cost for one of those systems installed by Reus on my car in Upstate NY??? You know, speakers, head, amp and maybe subs...Nothing too spectacular...Just discrete and sound's good. Thanks....
I had the full system in my 99 996 coupe. I replaced all the speakers, the headunit, added two subs in the rear, and a 5 channel amp. Aside from the sub box and the headunit, nothing could be seen till the boot was opened. Regardless if you go with Reus or a local shop, the important part is to find an installer that has the proper experience and that you trust.
A good high end install would be difficult in a GT3 as there are no door pods for a 5.25 or 6.5" driver. I have seen folks modify the standard door panels or order door panels with the speaker pods. If you have no plans of doing either you are limited to a 4" and tweeter in the dash and behind the rear seats. I am sure with enough money and a willingness to do some cutting and custom work, anything is possible.
Two 8" JL Audio subs in custom box friction fitted behind the rear jump seats.
JL Audio 5 channel amp mounted in false floor.

$5k roughly for a great system, and the beauty is they will change from car to car for you for only a labor fee of like $900 - so If you get a 360 next per-say they will give you there 360 system for $900 + the old system

But after being in sales for over 10 years prior to making a better career change, I am generally not in the mood for a sales pitch. I was just looking for some unbiased information/experience. Anyways, I am still contemplating if it's even worth upgrading the stereo...Why cover up the sweet exhaust note??? Generally, I will talk to the people that sell product/services when I have made the decision that I want to make a move. Its saves me time and the sales people's time...Your point is well taken, however...

I have never been happy with any of the audio systems i have heard in any high performance car. Reus is very good, with an emphasis on clean, natural reproduction and real bass, but honestly, there is so much noise in even a luxury sedan interior, that the notion of a real "musical" system, in the spirit of home high end audio, is close to ridiculous when you are talking about a sports car. Now, granted, different people have different ideas of what sounds good, what is "expensive" and what constitutes the "high end." Most of the expensive systems that i have heard installed in exotics are too loud, too artificial and are, to me, a distraction from what's going on with the performance of the car.
I did successfully have a big system installed in our 740i Sport, and it is impressive, if not entirely natural sounding. And, it came in at over 5k, without alot of custom fabrication.
The guys at AI Designs are about as good as it gets for design and aesthetics, so i would check them out. My home reference system has, in one form or another since the early seventies, revolved around full range electrostats, occasionally augmented by ribbons and woofers, driven by tubes on the top and middle, and the usual insane assemblage of overpriced phonocart/wiring/exotic phono preamp, and assorted cones, dampers and tweaks. Like most things, its an obsession that only gets worse, the more you get into it, and the cost/bang for buck ratio declines steadily as you get into the true high end. Most of what is marketed seems to me to be about big, not natural bass, and high db delivery without tonal balance or correct image. But, again, i believe its close to impossible to achieve correct sound in a car, so whatever makes you happy.....

You point is well taken....The GT3 is quite loud inside, devoid of much sound proofing insulation... Of the 500 miles or so that I have driven so far, I have listened to the stereo for about a total of 20 minutes when driving on the highways without the need to shift. I generally find that the radio is distracting when spirited driving is the call on twisty roads where shifting is common place. I like to be able to hear and feel my rpm's without having to rely on looking at the tach. Looks like if I decide to do anything, I may just keep my head unit and try adding a more powerful amplifier up front and upgrade the speakers if necessary and see how that works....Take care...
