BMC vs K&N Air Filters
BMC vs K&N Air Filters
Now no doubt somebody is shortly going to tell me that they are both made in the same factory but when a BMC air filter arrives it is soaked in Oil vs K&N whch seems much better quality and comes with a gasket seal as well. K&N's are cheaper too. Its a pity they don't make them for Ferraris

Saw this and no one answered. Exactly what was this thread about?
here is your old thread:

Are you having problems with BMC or KN?
i just bailed on my bmc and back to stock on a cut airbox much like the OP i assume? i noticed an immediate reduction in air intake but that was "feel". whatever it is, it isn't worth the yard debris i was accumulating in the bmc. i'm gonna stay with stock, as i feel any gain on hp is the stuff of myth. at this point. ymmv.
As it was put to me some time ago, the BMC is better than the KN, but I don't know for sure. But the same individual stated that for most hp applications the standard air filter was more than adequate. It apparently flows very well. I can see the BMC having an advantage on higher hp cars, maybe over 600bhp?
but is it worth maf issues that seem to crop up.

I don't have a Porsche yet, and my old SL does not have a MAF, but from my experience so far, the K&N filter I have requires a level of maintenance that is not worth whatever percieved air flow gain that I got by using it. The variables are the cleaning of the filter and the re-oiling. Too much of the renewing oil and you've set yourself up for a problem. Too little and not enough filtering.
For applications for heavy dust conditions - where the filter is going to need to be cleaned frequently, then K&N is probably the way to go. For now, I'm going back to the OEM paper filter for the Benz.

this is truly one of those questions that gives tons of different answers. I have a KN and have never had the guts to put it on my car
I have washed it, and it sure looks like it should flow better than stock.

I am in the same boat!!! Brand new, still in the plastic but afraid to use it even if the guy who sold it to me was saying, "don't worry about it"....
I am guessing that the these oil filters will give better performance at higher rpms since they reportedly flow 300% more air at the expense of 1/8-1/16th the filtration. But if all you gain is 5 bhp, I'd rather stick with the paper unit.
Agree!
here is probably the best thread I have read on this subject:

FYI if it helps your decision:
Once the car gets back from Texas we're doing some more testing on the intake side. Now we have all of our datalogging working and we have a pressure tap about 6" in front of the turbo inlet (one side). With stock airbox, air filter, and our intake pipes (stock intake plenum after MAF), I was seeing up to 3.5psi of vacuum at 600whp! Our pipes made a big improvement so I can't imagine what it was before. Removing the airbox gained about .5psi and 10whp, removing the stock air filter and running it open made negligible difference .
for me: replace with stock paper filter = find something else to obsess about
