Cooling Fan/s

This is the first time this made me wonder...

When the weather is hot on top of a spirited drive, the cooling fan at the front kicks in. I can hear it fine, but... do we have two cooling fans upfront (one per each radiator), or just the one? I can only hear the fan by the left hand side of the car (standing in front of car). Should I hear another on the right where other radiator is?

My temp solid, so no problems there.

Thanks.

Try with the a/c on and see if the right hand start. The left and right side radiator got also the condensor for the a/c in front of them. If with the a/c selected "on" you don't hear any fan , you have a fault. Durametric got a nice feature to operate those fan when the engine is not working and you can also select the three phases.

My a/c is on and I only hear left fan.

Is it usually fan itself, lose connection or fuse maybe...

Take a look at fuse C8 for start. There are some relays and of course malfunction of the fan can be a possibility....

If the fuse is intact, eliminate the relay possibility by exchanging relay #19 with relay#21. You do that with the ignition off and the relay carrier is on the driver side at the bottom of the dash....

Thanks mate. Will do. On business trip for a week will report my findings upon my return.

If I understand correctly turning a/c on and just turn ignition on without starting the car should turn fans on high speed? Or do I need turn the engine on?

Need engine running, a/c selected on you should have both fans running.

The speed is directly dependent of the water temperature. If it is cold it is going to be stage 1. Plus here are the details:

stage 1: a/c "ON" and/or water temp 100 C and air ointake temp of a/c greater than 8 C 46F
stage 2: 105 C 221 F and/or refrigerant pressure higher 232 psi
stage 3: 108 C 226 F and driving in excess of 6 mph and engine not idling.....

There will be an exam next month you better remember all those figures

Checked fuses fine, checked relays fine.

I had my bumper off for cosmetic re-spray 3 months ago. Is it possible that the paint shop could disturb the fan connection or is this not very likely? To get to the connection (does the whole bumper need to come off)?

I had remove the front bumper cover several times for radiators cleaning and I don't see how they can affect the fans function because the fans are in the back. (but, of course we never know...) Never done the job but I've checked the repair manual for the removal of the fans and they remove the front wheel housing liner to reach it. Page 1083. May be you should have a look at the condition of the plug.

If you had a Durametric you could run the fans in all 3 speeds to test them
