Major Help Needed Replacing Brakes

This morning I started the job of replacing my brake pads

I've only got as far as removing the small retaining clip

Im about three hours into this job and I'm completely unable to remove the bar that holds the pads in place

The bar has corroded to the extent where it's larger than the hole it need to exit through

Can anyone give me any tips on how to resolve this stupid problem

Thanks

Do you have a tapered punch like these?

http://www.steritool.com/tools/punches.htm

They should work.

you need to take a drift and drive it out with a hammer. push it b ack in first and spray some penetrating fluid such as pb blaster and let it sit for a bit. this will loosen some of the corrosion and then use a small wire brush to remove what you can. then drive it out with a drift pin and hammer

I had problem too at my first pads change and I had to removed the rust from the pins with my Dremel! And after lots of oil and a good punch like the one mention by Landjet.... Poor Ant , obviously the previous owner had a house besides the ocean

Decision made.....

I will no longer be carrying out any work on this car myself

From here on in I'll be paying someone else to deal with the headache

its not a headache at all. just be patient and work around the issue instead of passing it off (and your wallet) to someone who do the exact same thing. save your money for replacing coolant lines or a trans rebuild when the 2nd gear popout occurs. this is a 2.5 on a scale of 10 diffuculty

I guess with anything it depends on how much you enjoy it (itself a function of whether you have the right tools and instruction) and how much your time is worth.

Brakes aren't so hard.

tap em out!

After a full day of not even budging that retaining bar I've thrown in the towel

My brother has said he'll do the brakes tomorrow for me

I know brakes are an easy job - and that's exactly what my problem is

I like things that work
I very strongly dislike things that don't work

If something doesn't perform as its meant to then it has been designed incorrectly

I know it's a weakness in my character, and that at the age of 29 I should be able to control myself - But when a break pad can't be removed due to a corroded pin I become frustrated beyond the point that I can cope with

I have the tools, and most/some of the skills for working on this car
What I severely lack is the self control

Hopefully as I get older i'll calm down a little more and can enjoy these tasks that I'm presented with

I'm never selling the car, and I don't plan on dying anytime soon, so I've hopefully got a bit of time to learn these life lessons and self control

I haven't done it personally but this is the best explanation i've found for DIY.

Yep, very good, very accurate videos

But I'm in England, and everything over here is covered in rust, so it's all seized together
