My first week of 2001 996tt experience

So I've owned the car (2001 996tt manual 6spd) for a whole week now and drove about 200 miles. All I can say is the 996tt is an awesome car. The acceleration is is awesome... it pulls like crazy. This is my first ever Porsche and I am totally happy with it so far.

A couple of things that I'm trying to figure out right now though. This is a 2001 so I didn't expect it to be perfect. I have these two issues that I hope someone on the board can help me help. I've searched and searched the net but to no avail...

1 - When the clutch pedal is depressed past the 1/2 way point, I can hear and feel a squeaky sound. When I put my head down me the pedal area, I can hear that the noise is coming from outside the car and not inside. What does this mean? The previous owner said they the clutch accumulator have been replaced.

2 - I cannot get the seat memory functioality to work on neither the key nor the memory button. I have the 4 buttons in the seat memory area (M, Key, 1 and 2 button). I have tried all sorts of combination to try to save the seat memory but nothing I've tried seem to work. I've checked the fuses also and they are good. What else can I be?

Besides these two issues - the car is perfect. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Thanks.

Kiet

on item 1: the mechanic who replaced the accumulator did not lube the slave cylinder rod when the slave was re-installed.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome, 6speed is a great place to get information. I would suggest that you have ether a faulty switch or a control unit.

Item 2 - Once you have done the procedure to set the memory (and make sure the car is in reverse if you want the passenger mirror to move down when in reverse), the way to activate the memory is to press the memory button (1 or 2) until all motion stops. You can't just press and release 1 or 2 and expect all settings to get properly set.

If you set memory using the key fob, the settings are applied as soon as you unlock the door (using the fob) - it is usually finished before you even open the door.

I'm just saying all this stuff because the memory may indeed be getting set, you are possibly just not observing the results.

+1. I have it too. Doesn't hurt anything. It's just embarrassing that your $100k+ supercar sounds like an old Ford

Thank you all for the suggestion and advice. I have read the owner's manual on the seat memory and have followed it to the T, but still does not work. I'm guessing something is faulty at this point. I'm not sure if there's anyway to reinitailize the memory system like some other cars.

Yeah - I don't think it hurts anything either. My clutch and shift is fine. It's just so annoying to have that little squeak. I can also feel a little dent on the pedal when depressed passed the 1/2 way point.

What do you mean by that?

As far as the squeak goes, you'll have to wait till the next clutch job since it is my understanding you can't get to it easily.

My last 996TT had the clutch squeak, and my current one does too. I'm pretty sure it's just the helper spring and no big deal at all.

I also have been struggling to get all the memory seat info set. The memory recall is working but I can't see to get it saved to the key so when I unlock the car with the key the seat goes back to some other setting. Yes, I've followed the manual.....

Could also be the clutch fork needs some lube. Again, it's something you have to drop the transmission to get to so you'll likely just want to live with it until your next clutch replacement.

I had this issue. Ended up having to have the dealer re-program the key. There was a TSB on it...there two locations in the memory of the computer, one for each key. Apparently sometimes the locations get swapped so that Key1 is programmed into the memory slot for Key2 and Key2 is programmed into the memory slot for Key1.
