What to upgrade & Spotting previous upgrades
Hey Guys,
In the past week of owning my car, I've went through quite a change. The first time I drove it, my thoughts were, "Wow, this thing is FAST!". Now only a week into it, I'm saying, "This could be faster.".
That said, I can see just how modifying the car can quickly become addicting and expensive, lol.
I've read here about plenty of upgrades that can be done. I was about to take the ECU out and send it in to get flashed, only to find out there was already an EVOMs sticker on it.
My question is, what can I look for to spot previous upgrades?
Here's the items that have been done, which I am aware of: Fabspeed Exhaust, Agency Carbon Fiber Box Intake, ECU Flash (Not sure of the tuning specifics. I have Todd seeing if he can tell me anything.)
I have read a lot about Wastegate & DV upgrades. How would I know if this has already been done?
What type of upgrades would you guys recommend? Best bang for the buck sort of upgrades.
Thanks guys.
Michael

im actually going thru this myself! my plan goes sorts like this.
1. base line dyno to see were the car is at.
2. ordered speedteck economy intake system and modded plenum
3. ordered speedtech y pipe and 2.5" silicone tubing.
4. ordered 72 lb injectors to compliment the new influx of air.
5. ordered dual snorkel c/f box from ap
6. building 4.5" intercoolers.
7. ordered numeric shifter
8. ordered ams 1 bar wastegates
9. decided what tuner (epl) i wanted to use and went with his recommendations
10. removed the awd setup and went rwd.(looking for a proper lsd)
i was lucky enough to get full receipts with my car and knew what mods were already done.
i asked tons of questions from speedtech, markski ,sambott ,epl , protomotive ,tim941nyc and layinback. every one was immensly helpful and its a learning curve. so far im under 6000$ for the mods and hope to get about 75 rwhp when everything is installed and tuned. obviously im never going to be the top dog. dont want to be. but im hunting for a reliable fast and engine safe build that runs in the low 11's high 10's on a consistent level. im saving a turbo rebuild of my k24 or go alpha 28 as a last resort. any bigger and the cost doesnt justify the power gain unless you go for an all out build costing in excess of 30k imo

Thanks for the fast reply! I have a few questions regarding your response.
1) Does silicone tubing actually increase performance or is it more for strength? If so, do you have any idea of the expected hp gain?
2) Did you do the intercooler hoses?
3) Obviously the AP dual snorkel box has two holes. The hole on the left isn't connecting to a "snorkel". Is this normal?
I hate to sound so naive, but this is my first Porsche. Hopefully I can get myself up to speed quickly. (Pun intended.)

its for both. the inner doameter size is larger than oem so more airflow. and stronger cant give any hp gains im working on a complete package for my gains
2) Did you do the intercooler hoses?
the speedtech y pipe setup comes with the siliconr tunbing and replaces the restrictive y pipe with a smoother larger section
3) Obviously the AP dual snorkel box has two holes. The hole on the left isn't connecting to a "snorkel". Is this normal?
the AP does cone with a c/f left side snorkel. but no filter. i ordered the 997 left side snorkle to fab a diy like i read on here but its on a 10 to 12 week backorder. found a decent buy on ebay so i grabbed the A/P version
the 4.5" i/c will make a large difference in the ability to keep the power im going to make longer. the diy thread was amazing and so far i have just under 1000$ in the parts. my welder is charging 150$ for the welding so it will be under 1200$ for a set of i/c that run between 2700 to 3000$

E mail your vin number to EVOMS. They will have information on it.
Get a Durametric cable and log. That will give you tons of info.
What is your boost reading at WOT?
It has become a trend to bring upgraded cars back to stock before selling.
Take some pictures of the turbos, intake, intercoolers ect. and post. Maybe someone will recognize if there are any upgraded parts.

Don't know exactly what this one is, but I'll bet it's a Sportec knock-off...in any case if it doesn't have the extra opening in the "bracket" it isn't working (it might be bringing hot air into the system....bad idea). See pic of upper snorkel:

Just for burst resistance

Thanks for the pic. I certainly don't have that extra snorkel on the left. Check out the image of what I have going on. Where would I pick one of those up?

you have the a/p airbox . there should be a left side snorkel to go with the box. you cut thru the plastic panel to allow the air to flow thru. try vivid and see if they will sell you the snorkel separete. if not ill have a oem snorkel that can be modified to fit in the same place . 10 to 12 weeks backorder.
I'm pretty good with fiberglass. Is there anything special that needs to be done, or it just as simple as the one of the right?
Thanks,
Michael
some used jb weld for the snorkel but if i did it i would glass it and sand and paint to match. just be careful closing the lid so you dont crack it (snorkel)
Did all of those vendors recommend other than a stock airbox? I have had the best luck with a stock airbox (at the power level I was at). MOST (not all) people who go with an aftermarket airbox experience MAF issues.
my experience with maf issues with cars in general is that folks way over oil the filters and install them wet and run the car. i usually clean the filter and lightly spray with k&n oil then let the filter dry completely before reinstalling. i will even give the filter a light once over with an air gun to clean any residual oil off. never had any issues
they didnt necessarily recommend the airbox nor did they try to deter me from it. just following the logical path of airflow. get the most air possible into the airbox thru the modded plenum to the turbos , into bigger i/c then larger tubing to a t/b and into the engine. add injectors and tune.
