Question about 2nd to 3rd gear change

Hoping someone can chime in here on whether my clutch is having issues or my technique is wrong.

This is my first manual car (2004 996 tt cab, 44k miles). Roughly 1000 miles now since I bought it 4 months or so back.

Occasionally I will find that I significantly over-rev changing from 2 to 3rd. Not red-lining but definitely higher than normal. It happens perhaps once every couple of weeks.

I never have this issue in other gears.

Interestingly it appears to happen when I'm taking my time and holding slightly in neutral during the shift. I'm not forcing the gear change. I'm definitely taking my time and not pushing at all (ie. accelerating hard) when this happens. I don't recall having this issue when I'm changing gears faster.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if I completely understand what you're describing. Are you giving it throttle before you get all the way into 3rd gear? If you're in 3rd gear with the clutch out and it revs up like you describe, your clutch could be slipping indicating the need for a clutch change.

^^. At 44k and if original clutch you might be due eecially if you don't have PO history of ownership . And being your first manual car too. Are you on her in 2nd gear when this happens ?

If you are on the throttle moving from 2nd to 3rd, stop it. You only need to learn to do that when downshifting.

If you aren't on the throttle between shifts but after you engage 3rd you give it throttle and then it revs quickly without any speed increase, you have a slipping clutch.

Thanks for the info.

I've been examining my gear change technique. I don't find myself stepping on the gas while shifting.

I'm going to do the 6th gear test to see whether the clutch is slipping.

I wasn't doing an aggressive shift when this was happening but definitely could hear a higher than normal rpm level for the shift I was doing.
