Tiptronic Shifting behavior question

This is mostly aimed at the BlackHorsey since he's got the hopped up tippy, but anyone else with a tippy please chime in. Got a question as far as my tippy's shifting behavior. This is an 03' 46K miles, bone stock other than impending EBWerks exhaust. At any rate, while in auto mode not manual, when pulling away from a stop, as I feed in throttle in a normal/steady manner, the tranny is smooth as silk, leaves in 2nd as usual. When I get a little more aggressive with throttle feed in, I feel and hear a noticeable thunk from the tranny as if either the TQ or other internal gearset clutches are locking up? It starts out light, but becomes pretty pronounced the harder I launch. The harder the launch, the harder the thunk accompanied by a noticeable acceleration blip, and a full throttle launch, in auto, gives a really large thunk and a downshift to 1st. My question is, is that "thunk" normal behavior? If so, what is it that's making the thunk? If not, best guess as to what's wrong? In manual mode, no thunk, just a smooth launch and button shifts up and down behave normally. I guess I just never paid attention to thunk until recently, it's done it the entire year I've owned it, just started to make me wonder if there's something not right going on there? Opinions?

Cheers
Mikey

You need a new tranny mount.

+1 to tranny mount mine did the same thing and upon inspection it was shredded. You have a few options. You can do the window weld mod/repair, purchase one with delrin/harder inserts or throw in another stock one.

Thanks guys!!! Any source for the improved delrin or urethane bushing style mounts?

Change that tranny mount as soon as you can. I waited to change mine and it caused my tippy to start leaking. Needless to say, it was an expensive fix. I ended up beefing up the tranny with additional clutch packs and increasing the stall on the torque converter while I was at it.

Valley....have you done anything to the motor to really test the tip yet? Can we get an update on your build and what your experience is?

Pumptech,

Yeah, I upgraded to Markski's 18g billet spec 1 wheel, 5 FPR, 3.5 intercoolers and a Greddy Profec contoller (along with all the other supporting modes) and the tip is holding up without a hiccup. The 400-500 rpm increase in the stall converter really makes building boost while brake boosting great. I'm contemplating getting the TCU upgraded to increase the redline and shift speeds. Other than that, I'm very happy with the way the tip is performing. I inspect the underside of the car on a regular basis and the tip is as dry as a whistle.

How much power do your mods put down? How many miles on the tranny since power upgrade? Thx

Machinegunt,

I have never dyno'd my car so I don't know how much power it's putting out. The "last" few mods I want to do on the car before I'm done with the drivetrain are possibly installing some Protomotive 60lb injectors that I have sitting in my garage and to get the TCU reprogramed. The K24/18g Protomotive tune I have on the car right now is just a generic off the shelf 18g tune that I haven't had Markski/Todd fine tune over the internet because I have been undecided about the 60 lb injectors. I have the ususal supporting mods on the car (3.5 intercoolers, flexible intake y-pipe to the turbos from Markski, Miltek exhaust, BMC air filter, 5 fpr, 18g billet wheel, Greddy EBC, cooler spark plugs, forged DVs, 1 bar wastegate springs, larger headers, silicone hoses, etc.) so I figured I have anywhere from 575hp-625hp, give or take.

I have about 12k miles on the tranny since getting all the current modifications and haven't had a single problem with it. Very happy with the way it turned out.

How much power are you putting out with your setup?

On Evoms dyno I believe it was 589HP/605TRQ at the crank! I will have to get more details from you when I upgrade my tranny!

for the record BHT is tip traitor

also do not buy the tcu upgrade as it didn't do anything if its the same tcu upgrade that evo/sharkwerks/vivid offers...

I wouldn't say BHT is a traitor . He still cares about Tips and responded on almost every Tip thread.

This may offend some people, but I think he is the most knowledgeable Tip/ex-Tip person.

Bad107,

With regards to the TCU upgrade, I thought that in order to increase the torque limits on our tips we needed to get the TCU upgraded? Believe me, if I don't need to upgrade the TCU I won't because there are other things I can spend $1K on.

To some, it is waste of money; to me, it's not. I actually enjoy it. Most people think that it will improve the upshift speed but it doesn't (at least not noticeable). There are other factors of this mod.
