Opened up my gearbox for a simple gear swap and found my stock 3rd gear was on its way to fail. Out of the two gears the smaller gear with the syncro ring on it looked fine (the one that fails) but the other gear (in the pic) is the one that is toast. Strange part is the upgraded gear is 3mm wider on the syncro'ed gear, the one that fails?? well not in my case. It was the larger of the two the one thats sits on the pinion shaft.



All in all I am very pleased with the durability of the gearbox, I do not road race but the car does get a whipping every time I get in it. I use redline lightweight shock proof gear oil. I am not sure how good it is at transferring heat for you road course guys but a little data logging would answer that.

 

Are you going to replace with Motosport parts, or factory replacement ?
Steel synchros in the middle gears ?

Stock 1st motorsports 2nd and steel 3-5, brass for 6th. I went with the 997 gt2 gear. I am going to the mile, come on down.. Its been calling me ever since we where there in 07' I went back in 08 and rushed the car to get ready and had problem after problem.. I still feel like I am rushing though. I am a bit afraid of the airo at high speeds, Where I test I do not get cross winds.

 

Man, I know my gearbox is just a ticking time bomb. I hope to stay together before the Mile. See you in a couple weeks.

yes ! i like the gearset alot. we still got some other non related issues to sort thru but tranny is NICE. we were doing rolling burnouts at 140mph on the L.I.E service road

 

just got off the phone with tim, he told me the first thing i need to buy is gears. before anything. we need to go for a rid ein ur car. i cant deal with tims clutch.

 

You will be in very rarified air with your power levels. You should call JOE in your hood as he has the fastest 996 TT run ever, I believe. You have no friends above 230 mph. The 996TT's appear to be more stable than the GT2's (you could also look at 9FF website, as I think they have gone 240+ in their car (not in a mile) on a track. I do not have the ***** for that run you will have to make. I suppose make a few runs and see how it feels before "matting it in 6th" Good luck and I hope you have a really good, well built cage ! Yeah me to, when steve said he could not deal withs Tims clutch I was thinking HUH????? The ERP clutch is one of the best feeling clutches I have ever put a foot to.

 

i havent driven his new clutch (i'm in boston). but i'll be home this weekend. hopefully it's back together so i can take it to 7-11 and back (sideways). LOL .

 

Agreed. I've driven clutches that hold half the power and can't compare in driveability.
