Road Trip: Vegas to Austin
Road Trip: Vegas to Austin
Car is sold and is missed. See last page for update.
I finally picked MY 996TT. I leave tomorrow for Oakland California to pay the current owner. I then drive to Vegas to pick up my waiting friend. What's your recommended route between Vegas and Austin (dropping off my friend Todd) then to Houston. I see three options:
1. Phoenix - Tycson - El Paso
2. Flagstaff - Alburquerque - Abilene
3. Flagstaff - Roswell - "west Texas"
We both have meetings on Monday, which means we must leave Vegas Saturday morning and be in Austin by 2pm Central (kids soccer game).
Summary:
Pickup car in Oakland Friday morning
Drive to Vegas
Stay the night in Vegas
Leave Vegas Saturday morning
Arrive in Austin by Sunday 2pm
What route for best time and most fun

Having made this drive when I lived in Austin, I strongly recommend route #1 via PHX/TUS/ELP. The Northern routes take you through the mountains, still some snow, and New Mex has some absolutely terrible roads. As soon as you get past Tucson, you can really move out, and past El Paso it gets even better. The scenery is West Texas, which is the armpit of the nation as far as the view is concerned, but the roads are straight and smooth. When you hit Kerrville, you pick up Hwy 16 into Fredericksburg and then on the Austin, the CKU.
If you feel like stopping on I10 as you leave Phoenix for a burger I'd be happy to meet you guys.
Cheers

A tip for driving in west Texas: Get gas when you see a gas station. The stations are pretty far between so if you are driving something that doesn't have great range you don't want to skip one.

I like the first option.

Thank you for posting them BlackHorseTurbo.
