996 Turbo / GT2 Turbo discussion on previous model 2000-2005 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo and 911 GT2.

Is trying to obtain a Porsche 996 Turbo a shallow goal?

Save your money, get counseling, you have a low self esteem issue.

You don't care about a Porsche, any expensive car will do. You want to appear to be what your perception of the owner of an expensive sports car is, and are willing to spend years wages to take the short cut in getting there.

Find a psychological help forum, I think they can help you more than we can.

Net net, just don't be this guy.

Honestly, probably buying anything that costs 2-4x what the common man buys is probably "shallow". you can throw 200 dollar shoes, 90 dollar shirts, almost any type of wheels, 200 dollar dinners etc etc. All of these things are wants and not necessary, but who cares? Live for you. Everyone spends money on something, so it's up to you what experience you're chasing and if it's worth the cash. Similar to my response to your other thread - focus your time on how to make money instead of how to spend it and you'll really be much better off.

Very wise words, and do appreciate your reply. I don't spend much money now besides on food, and entertainment like BD discs and CDs

So look, I think that you're hearing us, but you're not actually listening to what we're telling you. A car is a very single minded goal, and while I appreciate it, it's really just metal. What that car represents though could be so much more.

A good portion of the guys on here probably purchased this car as a milestone in their life, career, etc. The car was the exclamation point on something they've done. This is true for me anyway.

If you just save up for 3 years and penny pinch to get there, you're MAKING it a shallow asset. Don't look at the porsche, ferrari, lambo as the dream - the dream is having enough success in your endeavors that these things are part of the life you built. (I realize we are talking different categories of awesome with those cars I listed)

As one other poster has said, he knew folks who have worked hard to get a 911--not a Boxster or Cayman, but a flagship car from Porsche. Sure, I understand and respect that others who bought THEIR 911s, had done so AFTER making good money or being successful-- really how does one define this as it's very subjective, and usually in a materialistic sense.

And yes, Ferrari and Lamborghi are awesome as well, with Lamborghini being the best IMO, out of every car manufacturer out there in the world.

I think treating the car like a trophy is a little weird and almost shallow...

Here was my decision process.

Porsche 911: Great power out of the box, responds well to mods, good handling, great feel, great history, and awesome styling. Ah, I can afford it. 1.45% interest rate, even better, save the cash!

But whatever someone's motivation to buy the car is their choice. If you (not directed at anyone specific) got it because you want to prove that you've "made it" then that's fine. The only milestone my car represent is the milestone of buying the car I've lusted after for a while.

I kind of want to prove that I'm better than some folks whom I hate, like former bosses, and would love to see the look on their faces when I drive off in a 911.

However, outside of this scenario, I DO wish I had sexy car like a 911 Turbo (996 and newer)-- something to be proud of, and like I had said earlier, an accomplishment for myself, finally achieving a goal.

The first time I have seen a Porsche 911 (996 body), was in Gone in 60 Seconds . Growing up in my city, I had zero interest in cars until I was in junior high. The opening scene from this film, was one of my favorite and most memorable scenes, since I was a kid. It still is one of my favorite movies ever, regardless of what anyone says.

Not at all...I loved my 996 Turbo. Just make sure to get one in good shape so that you don't end up spending thousands in service.
