Donuts in AWD?

We've all see the cool video of people doing donuts in 996TTs in the dry and snow. How does that work? Don't the front tires grab?

It seems by looking at those vidoes that the front tires pull for a second and then let go.

What's the inside scoop?

They are doing wider turns most likely and its cause the car to slide then the front wheels to pull, car regains speed then slides again, and the process repeats.

slowly drive turning the wheel (at like 5 mph) then ev up pop the clutch and keep wheel turned. i dunno its really not that hard, im sure if you turned your wheel and just punched it, the wheels would all break loose in a matter of seconds.

As long as the rear wheels are spinning good, it sends very little torque to the front wheels. Hence the donuts ...

I saw a video of a subaru STI doing some of the best donuts ever, it was like someone has stuck a pole down through the center of the roof and the car was spinning around on that.

The front wheels don't grab as well as you think while doing donuts.

Typical locked center diff donuts when you have enough hp

When you powerslide a RWD car, you can feel the center of the rotation is far ahead, in an AWD, you can feel it's right in the center console. Awesomeness.

Popping the clutch with the wheels turned puts a big strain on the front outer CV joints.

If someone can host a video, I have a great Mini DV video, taken by Eric at Cargraphic, of me doing crazy smoking donuts in the Hershey parking lot in Pennsylvania.

Just don't try them in reverse, worst idea I've ever had. You'll end up with this...blown reverse gear tranny taking up space in the garage. Oh well, learning experience, right?
