service question (water pump)

Need input, I have a 2002 996 TT tip with 48,000 km and when I bought the car it had the plugs, coils replaced before I bought it.

I wanted to make sure all my service was up to date and wanted to the fluid change on my front and rear diff and also trans oil change (auto)

the shop mentioned I should do the water pump as a preventative measure because of the age of the vehicle. He told me if the pump goes it will most likely kill my engine.

thoughts please...

anyone here have thier pump go but did not do damage to the engine...I never heard of this happening....I can see if the blades crack and makes it way through the water jackets..then that would do damage.

If the pump has a composite blade, it can break and stop pushing water, causing the engine to overheat. This could cause a problem.

If it's a metal blade then usually they will start to leak water from a weep hole.

Later, Steve

The impeller is made of plastic on the TT. You got a temperature gauge and it will tell you if the pump is gone..Same thing will happen if the belt broke..I don't understand the mechanic statement. The water pump replacement is a good job....I have to replace mine when my engine was out for coolant pipes welding and found one impeller broken. Temperature was normal....

Thanks for the input..I did not realize that the impeller on the pump was plastic and prone to breaking which does concerns me.

By genuine you mean it has a Porsche PN on it? Obviously Porsche does not really make these. How do you know the blades are metal? and since the original part was plastic, is it a new PN?

Also curious by Mike statement. The original part# is 996 106 011 72 and it is replaced by 996 106 011 76. This new part is what I have installed on my engine last year and the impeller was a plastic one.... But the plastic looks like metal....See previous picture.....

Replaced mine when it began to leak at the bearing. This happened after the pump was removed to fix a water plug popping out of the engine. Expensive day-
