996tt Exhaust Stud Replacement - Anyone use 30mm studs?

The factory p/n is 90008105901. It's an M8 x 1.25 x 22mm stud. They are roughly $4.xx each.

I was wondering if anyone used a 30mm stud size. They can be found at various online retailers for about $0.6x.

I swap my aftermarket exhaust out for the stock one every once in a while when one of our local tracks has a decibel restriction. I'd like to replace all of the studs on the turbos (14 total), since the current set is starting to give me trouble.

My worry is that I'll have clearance issues or problems with the extra 8mm.

Is anyone able to chime in and verify? Or have a recommendation on where to get the 22mm size for a decent price? I'd even settle for a 25mm

Thanks,
Darren

I'd get a piece of 8mm threaded rod in grade 12.9 and cut my own. I use a air die grinder with a thin 3" cut off wheel. You can cut one about every 15 seconds. I do this stuff all the time. Use antiseize when screwing them in. You can make make a stud driver using an 8mm high nut with a bolt and lock nut screwed in one end a few threads and a ball bearing inside where it will contact the stud.

I remember seeing some posts about people using longer studs for replacement because they are cheaper.

That 2 degrees of wrench turn you can get on the top bolts is going to be rough with longer studs though, lol.

On my aftermarket exhaust, the angle of the expander as it goes to the cats is steeper then the angle of the stock muffler. When I install the aftermarket exhaust any longer studs would hit the cat expander and I would not be able to tighten the flange to the turbos. It would punch a hole into the cats if I did. BTW, I have an MTM 100 cell cat aftermarket.

Good to know, I was worried about this as well.

If I remember correctly one side of the stud is threaded longer than the other. Thread the longer side into the turbo. Kind of makes a shorter stud.

I am cat less now but the same studs worked when I was running fab speed 100 cell cats. Other cats could be sized differently so that could be a concern.

Good call!

You are correct. I just did this job two weeks ago and used 30mm studs. The are definitely shorter on the side that goes into the turbo and have more threads on the opposite end.
Here is what I used:

Search for this part number once you are on the page:

edit - Oops, I didn't see this in Todd's post...oh well two confirmations are better than one
