HELP: Which turbo to buy? 996 TT? X50? GT2?

Hi guys,

I have decided to buy a 996 turbo and would like some greatly appreciated advice on my dilemma. I am considering the standard 996 turbo or possibly an X50 TT or 02' GT2.

The reason I am considering a standard 996 turbo is beacause I was going to modify it or the obvious, for financial reasons. However, I do have concerns of voiding the warranty with extensive mods. If I purchase an early 996 tt, I would keep my M5 as well.

If I buy the X50 or GT2, I will probably sell my M5 and buy an inexpensive sedan, such as an Accord or Infiniti G35 as my primary daily driver.

I will be using the 996 turbo as a partial daily driver and weekend toy (3 days a week).

What would you do? Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Sandy

Welcome!

What i would do if i were in your situation is get a used 996TT and then modify it with either Ruf, EVOMS or Protomotive. The 996TT w/ X50 from what i heard is a rip off. And the GT2 is a great car and you probably don't need to do any engine mods on it. Just my 0.02 cents.

If you were going to compete, I'd say get a GT2,
but according to your specs, I definitely think you
should get a non-X50 996tt. It will be a little cheaper,
and if/when you want more, there are affordable,
reliable, already-tested-by-owners packages to
leap past the X50 power for *much less money*.
People are pounding their 600+HP cars without
problems, and you can get a safe 500HP for
about $3000 or so. (exhaust of your choice and
an Upsolute reprogram for $500). If you want
to go higher after that, you will probably have to
go to a different chip programmer (GIAC,Protomotive)
for ~$3000, and buy the other parts needed.

Another one

Another M5/Porsche Driver?!?! Porsche should just make a commerical.

"When the M5 is just not enough and you could care less about the people in the back seat."

Oh yea..

I would get buy a base turbo and mod it. You could even maybe find a tuner that will take everything out and put all stock back in case you have any major problems.

Sandy:

I already posted my feeling on the M5 board and personally over the phone. Get the 996tt and start researching a chip, exhaust, suspension, and ssk. M5 and a modded 996tt is a hard combo to beat. Good luck.

Get an '02 instead of an '01, as there are a couple of improvements. As the others said, you can get an easy 500 HP, which is probably all you need based upon your description. For almost the same money you can have a used Turbo and an M5 instead of ordering a new Turbo. Not even a close call.

The GT2 is not for everyone, I would say pick up a used 01-03 Turbo, they are all pretty much the same except the X50 option wasnt available in 01, do some mods that are to your liking, keep the M5 such a great car, so you wont be compromising much with your second car.

Smile

With the nice dry weather you have, the AWD grip of the standard or X50 TT is not as necessary as compared to if you lived in, say, Seattle. I can't believe how cheap the barely-used '02 GT2s have gotten; you should definitely get one of those.

It will hold value better than either of the other cars. It will respond to mods as well or better. You'll have the nice adjustable suspension from the factory.

I for one wish I had held off on getting my Porsche "fix," and had bought a used GT2 instead of a new Turbo.

I know it exists somewhere in the archives, but could some quickly give me a rundown of the differences between '01-03 996 TT's that was mentioned above.

I was in the same position a few weeks ago and chose an 04 TT Cab. I wanted to spec mine out from the factory so I passed on some pretty good used deals. If new is not too important go with an 02/03 TT and save the 18k for the X50 and do some minor mods.

BTW we have the identical taste in cars

cb44, Early 01 Turbos had front bumperettes, solid spoke wheels and no glovebox, then the rest of 01 Turbos got hollow spoke wheels and the front bumperettes were removed, 02 Turbos all had hollow spoke wheels, a glovebox and the X50 power upgrade option was introduced, cosmetic aerokit I believe was introduced in either 02 or 03, 04 Turbo coupe production has been cut drastically, have turbo script on tach, hope that helps you, thats all that comes to mind now.

JASCLASS,

Thanks for info...

Am deciding right now on a silver/blue '02 996TT with 2,700 miles - basically new. Some options (dk. wood, pdc, wheel, cd chngr). Currently at $99.5K - good deal or not?

Wholesale is 93 grand. If I were you, I would not get the car for anthing over 94 grand.

Since virtually all '02's are listed above $100K (in a quick search) are they selling for much less? Or are buyers paying that much over wholesale?

Don't want to be the guy that overpaid, but at the same time do not want to hold out for a price that very few get.

CB44, Its a fair market value, 02s are listed at approx 100k give or take, the car you are talking about has low mileage, desirable color, and as long as its a straight car look to get it for mid 90s, its not a wholesale price car from what you described, keep in mind the options are irrelevant on resale, let me know how that works out for you.
