Fender rolling???
Fender rolling???
Does anyone have any experience with fender rolling and is it a bad idea? I have alway run 305/25/19 on my car with no problem. It was time for new tires and upon purchase I was told the tire is no longer made. My only option was 315/25/19. I purchased the tires mounted them and of course they are rubbing very lightly. Yes my car is lowered for those who want to know. So the question is can and should I roll my fenders or is there a company that makes a 305/25/19? I realize that the 305/30/19 exists but it's taller than the 315/25/19. Any ideas???
I wanna roll my fenders too but all the popular fender rollers wont fit 5x130... Maybe buy a Eastwood fender roller and a 5x130 to 5x120 adapter to bolt it on?
I rolled the fenders in my 350z it was a piece of cake, I borrowed a roller and used a heat gun to heat the clear coat (to prevent cracking) and rolled em up on a 45* angle. It took about 30 mins a side going slow and keeping the paint warm and overall was a pretty painless process, my 350z was 7 years old at the time and had no paint issues with the rolling at all.

I did mine with the eastwoods roller. I was going to post it up in the DYI section but haven't had time. I have tons of pictures but, it was easy. First side took my 4hrs, second side took me 35-40min! Can you tell I was nervous?
Just heat the paint well and pay attention to the roller angle and that it makes sense to the angle you want pushed in.
I have an Eastwoods roller modified to fit a Porsche (130 x 5 hub ) if your looking to buy one
Used once!(well twice)

are there any pics of the gt2 oem fender roll? i would like to roll my fenders but looking deep inside the plastic inner fender is tucked inside the fender lip making a smooth transition from liner to lip. if the fender lip is rolled then what will hold the inner fender liner in place?
is the gt2 fender liner shaped differently to accomodate the fender roll the factory does?

32Krazy,
I think the TT is similar. When I rolled mine, the edge of the fender and the liner is what I "felt" with my finger to determine if I closed the gap. I just rolled it until it pretty much "pinched" the liner. It never fully pinches it where you can't remove the liner as the metal has some spring back to it and it doesn't dig into the plastic. I would say you can still slip a piece of paper in there.

evil996tt how about a fender rolling tool rental!! i tried the eastwood on mine but found it wouldnt fit. i would gladly rent yours for a week
I had prices from many shops. Local DSM/Honda guys charging $50 a fender all the way to $500 complete. The problem is NONE of them would say if the paint would get damaged. I am a tool freak so, I just buy what is needed. I figured that by the time I rented it($50-100) and then it shipped $30 each way, I was almost half way to owning it so, I just bought it. I also already had a real nice heat gun.
I figured if anyone is going to "F" up their car, it would be me,
I bought the tool, modded it to fit(very easy with a metal band saw. I would have milled the plate but was in a rush) and started rolling. If you use the heatgun, it is near impossible to crack the paint. I'm not saying you can't but, you really have to be man handling it to mess the paint up.
Nah, the Porsche fender does not roll over like your AMG. It lays over flat against the liner and that is all you need. If you take the liner out, you might pick up 1 or 2mm but that would be it. I don't think you can get it paper thin. I took pictures and I will post them up in the DYI section in a bit.
I also wanted to add, it doesn't "roll" like you think. The flat part of the "lip" is double thick metal and it stays flat. You can't roll that part. If you feel the inner edge to it, you will notice a gap between the fender and liner. That is the actual part that gets rolled. It is a 2-3mm(est) piece that is "thinner" and that is what gets rolled. I tried my best to take pictures but it is hard to see with a white car and my crappy photography skills.

thanx evil996tt i appreciate the effort. i have gt2 fitment in 18" 315 rubber and need to soften the rear up a bit to get better weight transfer at the track. worried about cutting the sidewall as its a flush fit so havent done anything yet. fender roll would help a ton
32K, Get your car on jackstands, dislocate your shock and sway bar on one side and then lift up the one wheel and see where it goes. I just used a large bar and wedged it under the tire and the ground and lifted. This way, I could control it and not damage the tire or fender.
I rolled the lip until the sidewall/tire slid by and the tire bottomed in the fender well. As you lift the tire, you will notice it "tucks" into the wheel well on an angle and actually pulls away from the lip due to the suspension geometry. There is less rolling needed than you might think.
Once you roll it and it clears, I installed the shock and sway bar and lowered the CAR with some heavy patio pavers under one tire to see how much suspension travel I even had. Come to find out, I barely have any as my car is real low and almost on the bump stops! The bump stop barely lets the tire go into the wheel well as it is. I barely had to roll it.
FYI - I have PS2's 315/25/19's on 11.5" F14's(not sure of the offset but its good).

First pic is regular ride height
Second pick is lowered on blocks
Third pic is suspension disconnected and wheel stuffed into the wheel well.
I honestly think I have 1" suspension travel in the rear!
