With the stock clutch I would rev to about 3500 RPM and slip the clutch and the car would rocket out of the hole. With the aftermarket clutch I cant slip the clutch anymore so I have to learn how to drive it again. I have tried launching from 3000 to 4000 RPM but it just chirps the tires then bogs.

Any methods out there to help launch with an aftermarket clutch? Go up even higher than 4k?

 

Have you tried dumping the clutch with a slight slip?

 

Practice.. each set up is different...

 

My car (2003 gt2) get terrible wheel hop when I dump the clutch from a standstill in first...

I usually drop it at 4-5k which is where most launch control systems limit the RPMs to dump it.

 

I know the softronic launch control for the 996 Turbo is set at 5200RPM but man that seems high for my brain to accept. lol I will try 4500 RPM and see how that goes.

 

I'd listen to him. I've been drag racing for over 15 years and I will tell you that there is no magic number that works, you just have to practice and find the sweet spot. If softronic is at 5200 there's a reason for it. Id say start slowly increasing the RPM's on your launch until you find where it's the best launch for you.

have to keep trying. keep going up 500 rpm until it stops bogging down. i launch at 5.5-5.7k at the track.

 

its not the launch thats giving you trouble its the suspension, tire pressure, tire tread, and track conditions. each one of these can give you fits.

as an example in ohio i ran 30 psi in my r888 and launch at 4500 rpm hook was decent for a crap track and 60 ft were 1.8.

moved to beech bend and car hooked so hard off the line it actually stalled! forward motion started the car and ran a 2.9 60 ft and a 13 sec et. major embarrasement!

aired up to 33 psi and was able to launch at 4500 spun the tires a bit and got a 1.9 for a 11.9 run. 3 psi made all the difference for that day

 

Practice Practice Practice...every car and every clutch is different. NEVER just DUMP your clutch. That would be the best way to learn how to pick up your axles parts and put them in a cardboard box...

 

You have to practice to find your sweet spot....
This might be a helpful way to you, if you do not have launch control in your map.
Try starting at about 3,500rpm..Bring the RPM's up to that point, or point where you think they should be, > then slowly let the clutch up to the point just before engagement , >then at that point while you start to ride the clutch out, engaging it,> try to put the gas pedal to the floor as fast as possible during that clutch engagement release.

This is fascinating discussion to me... I had a bad experience when I let a friend of mine drive my new to me X50 (stock everything, not reflashed). He did a series of high RPM launches. Next week or so, the clutch started slipping. After replacing several parts for around $3500, I'm content to launch in the 1K - 1.5K RPM range. I tried to rationalize the whole thing and tell myself that he didn't do it, and it was slipping already because of the prior owner (car only had 35K miles on it). When I tried to get confirmation from my indy, he sort of indicated that with the Turbos and X50s, yes, you can actually F'up the clutch in a short single session.

When I first read these posts, hearing about 4K (and higher) launches, I'm starting to get a little more encouraged.

So, I'm guessing that 2K and 2.5K launches are "ok" on a stock clutch, flywheel and pressure plate?

Also, based on a comment or two, there seems to be flashes that will limit your launch RPM to presumably decrease launch times and perhaps save your clutch? Which ones will do that, for example?

The friction point with the new CM stage 3 is so small that it is impossible to slip the clutch. I wouldnt say I have to dump it but there is no wiggle room. I'm going to try raising ther RPM a bit and go from there. I don't want to abuse the car and hardly ever launch it but want to know what the best method is for my set-up for when the time comes. Thanks guys.

 

on my new clutch it depends.
if im street racing some fool, 2500-3000 (MAX) and the car literally sling shots off the line..

997's have awd's that work.
996 with our without the front drive require a bit more skill.

 

Do you dump the clutch or ride it out??

 

Remove the clutch pedal booster spring and that will help the feel ..
I did that with my CM clutches and it did help,as others have said that on here...Not a lot but just enough..
