Lost timing chain engine toast
Lost timing chain engine toast
Need advise from people smarter than me. Have an 02 x50 with 55k miles.
Lost timing chain and Porsche dealer says it's toast. and they want 35k for new motor which I can't justify. My question, can the engine be rebuilt and if so who all would you reccomend. I talked to Motor Meister but have not read anything good about them. The dealer didn't crack the engine so I really dont know the true extent of the damage. I love this car and planned on keeping for many more miles. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

Since you're in Dallas, have you talked to Hans Hoffman over at RAC? They can do major work and would be quite a bit less than the dealer for sure. I don't know anything about Motor Meister but I can definitely vouch for RAC (formerly RUF) as they do all the work on my car.
I am not one of the "smarter ones" here, but wanted to say sorry to hear about the motor. I know it obviously happened, but it sounds wierd that the chain would fail with so low miles. Was it tracked considerably? Oilling issues? Any precursor noise or signs? I only ask as I am a fellow X-50 owner and would look to glean info from you so I and others could prevent the same sort of thing if at all possible.

Good question but I knew it was bad the minute it happened. Had the radio on heard a bang, thought i hit something, engine light flashing abs flashing car felt like it was running on three cylinders pulled off the road and engine died.

I've seen a guy do a huge rebuild after a timing chain fiasco and spend tons of $$$ and not really ever get the car back to where it should be.
My advice? Find a ~$10k or whatever stock USED motor and just replace it. Don't go nuts with all the 'fixes' unless you're really bored or loaded (
). You can drop $40k on an engine build without blinking.

Sorry about your misfortune. You better get a second opinion on this failure. If it is in fact a broken timing chain the cheapest option is to get a used engine like this one on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PORSCHE-996-...53c15f&vxp=mtr
You should be ashamed. (Writing this one down for possible later use).

I am ashamed and I take it back.
