With no oil pressure it will run rough regardless of the state of the motor. These motors are very oil pressure dependent!

OP --- Do not start and run this thing under any circumstances, to hear what it is doing or _____.

You do have a serious issue as you already know; but the motors safeguards just might have prevented serious damage. People here can speculate till the cows come home as that service is free, many forum types have very little mechanical knowledge other then what they have read on the internet and as a person that knows engines real well I will say the problem could be very minor to very major and there is just no way you are going to actually know until someone lays there hands on the car.

maybe i am wrong. i'd like to hear what specific minor failure you have in mind that could cause this, i've taken M96 apart once or twice so i'll try to follow.

yeh.....why are you running it at all? you are maximizing damage! if you have a broken rod the engine would likely bind up. dont run it!!!

I'll pull it apart myself. I've seen a few bare blocks for sale, any chance I can rebuild with one of those as long as the rest looks good? With some upgraded rods of course.

As has been said, speculate until you puke, but until you take it apart, no one knows. Could be a $20 oil pipe or a $20k motor rebuild. I've evacuated a few cases in my day. If it was a "catastrophic" failure..you would have heard it..especially at 155 mph. Could have "holed" a piston (NOT always a tuner problem)...Fuel system failure? Most likely have a bearing problem if you lost oil at the rpm and speed. Did you see an oil light come on?

There are several things on top of that motor that could spring a leak that would cause a rapid dump then no oil pressure. Reservior line is there, some cooler bits, a few galleries with openings up top.

It not an offence to you Prodigymb as you do not have a magic crystal ball, I do not care how many motors you have taken apart because no matter how many you have done this one is unknown until you actually DO!

Ok, everyone cast lots as to what happened, and I'll take it apart in the next 2 weeks. Hmmm.... add to cart. If this is worst case scenario, not too bad I guess. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-Porsche...bf39f7&vxp=mtr

I have seen more then one car run and drive with only 5 rods.. Do a compression check first. turn motor by hand, you are looking too see if all the cylinders make psi. you can get 60 psi by hand. is there oil in the car? I have yet to see a factory installed galley plug come out but there is always a first, seen one removed and re installed blow out tho. If the rod breaks right at the big end and does not pull the rod bolts apart it will break the drive from the ims to the pump, either by smashing the pump or the coupler. one or two go arounds and all's clear no more banging. Maybe jiffy lube left the drain plug lose in the case?? lol

Very true about the factory plugs Tim. I have seen a few oil reservoirs leak at the fitting at the top because they were damaged or tweaked while individuals were pulling the motor out and in. Also several oil cooler issues. Also I have seen a few issues relating to the oil filters and canisters....

Fact of the matter is no one knows until you actually Do, Tim knows these motors better then I and he had no smoking bullet as to what it was. Find the reason for the leak then ponder all the implications after that. I really am curious as to what it could be though.

I think I'd really like to rebuild it with kick *** rods if I can. I had better just go to an ethanol fuel setup also, I'm guessing the pump gas probably got me killed.
