sounds much more like it.. or a low mileage unbuilt motor for 15k give or take. unless i was building a car, i would opt for a low mileage motor and just bolt on what i wanted to make a dd and that might be enough. the flip side being this might be an opportunity to build a beast, ( if that suits your wants/needs ) that one might not otherwise take on the expense to do. but no more than 50 hrs labor to build and $ parts is reasonable.

50 hrs labor + parts sounds a lot closer to reality.

has anyone created billet crankcase halves yet?(haven't seen/heard of any) ...given the number of crazy HP builds and fair number of broken rod-busted case scenario's on 'normal' cars, I imagine there would be a market for it, especially for those who want added crank/case stability on their mega builds..

Cases are plenty strong. Rods are the weakest link. Change rods, some port work and mechanically you can make 1000 wheel.

happy to hear from someone in the know!
they seem to hold up to just about anything, but I'm thinking more about is there any 'twist' in the case where main bearings and such experience odd wear patterns? IIRC, Porsche up'ed the case hardware size from 993tt to 996tt to help this, would there be any benefit to billet case or are the factory cases good in that perspective too? Just seems would be an easy 'upgrade', as well as an easy replacement for those who've punched a hole in one, with today's CNC knowledge/availability..
Thanks,

Sorry to hear about it.

They usually have 3.6TTs on car-parts.com.

I found a long-block with low miles for $7500 when my motor blew on 1.3/91 octane and crazy 9ff tune.

The motor had low miles and has been absolutey great - save a water pump that went south AFTER the south. I would replace the water pump and pin your coolant lines while you're in there.

You can prolly do the swap w/ engine/labor for ~$15k

Just confirmed, cyl #2 on the passenger bank does not go up and down = (

I'm going to proceed to pull the motor and take it apart to see what is salvageable and go from there.

But the other ones do?? Prob broken rod on the shaft. If it broke at the journal would likely bind and not be able to turn crank. My .02

Yah it runs even, as I've indicated before. Clearly my case has a hole in it as well. Is that not so bad for a blown motor, relatively speaking?

I thought all tunes out there were made for a specific octane rating so you do not to have to worry about detonation? One of the first things I was asked was where do you live and what is your best octane level.

Relatively speaking it would have been better if the case would not have been shot. You may find a welder who can fix it, depending on where and how large the hole is, but usually this ends up in buying a new case, which is quite expensive.

Now that everything is apart, you are going to do an engine build, no?

guess i do have a crystal ball? im an optimistic realist by nature, but in this case IMO this was clear cut from what he described.

OP there is not going to much you can salvage. cam towers and valve covers maybe. the cheapest route is probably buying another motor online. your cases are most likel cracked, cylinders are damaged.... and the heads probably are too. your oil pump is damaged and IMS is most likely too.

Looking at the piston through the spark plug hole, and it looks to be in tact. Could I have gone lean fuel in one cyl, had that cyl seize, and disconnect the rod from there? My fuel system is stock with 60lb injectors, running 1.4 bar on 95 octane. Is that enough fuel?
