safe to drive a 996 turbo in winter ?
I'm in the market for a 996 turbo as I want to drive it all year long, in all seasons.
but my mechanic says he doesn't recommend driving a 996 turbo in winter and in snow , as rust can build up in some underneath / under tray area the turbo ? or the rust inhibits something structurally underneath the turbo ?? Is this the case ?

Snow and salt are no dif on a Pcar than any car cept the Porsche body stands up better than most. O.K so corrosion, of course, does not 'help' with the ease of maintenance....i.e. the way things come apart and can be worked on.....suspension parts for instance. Nothing new about that. After many yrs things tend to fuse together....still fixable.
If your Pcar is a daily driver (not a track car or garage queen) then more power to you for wanting to drive it yr round. Driving is too fun, life is too short. Porsches are a hoot in the winter....especially with the right wheels & tires.
Good luck.

This will be my first sports car I ever tried to drive in the winter...where I live 2 to 3 weeks of snow and the rest of winter is just cold with icy roads and rain.
If you have a lot of snow and for a long time...I would be worried about the ground clearance...good luck!

this might sound rhetorical? but how much sense would it make for a high performance awd porsche not be well suited to driving in inclement weather, eg snow? just imagine you're in a better handling zamboni. though salt is something to wash off at any opportunity. no doubt.
but as noted above, i'd venture your car will perform far better and with more reliability if you drove it throughout winter than if you left it parked in a garage for the same duration. as one might expect, these cars are not delicate. i wouldn't be worried about it at all.

in vancouver, you dont get much of a hard winter, buy some real good tires like the michelins, or blizzaks and dont try to push it with cold pavement you can drive it everyday.
but i would reccomend running by the carwash everyweek and spraying off the bottom of the motor to try n keep the cleaner.
ive driven my turbo with a gt640 kit through montana in the snow, which sucked with summer tires i was taking it easy

Go to a motorcycle shop and pick up a few cans of chain wax. Spray this on the suspension arms and as many bolts and nuts as you can underneather the car. This will keep them protected from the winter elements.
Great cars in the snow for sure, just fit the correct tires of the conditions you will drive in.
