Maybe you should look at CGT values. The reality is some of them have lost THE VALUE OF A NEW M5 in less than a year. Very few new cars are the exception and most of those happen to be Ferrari's bought at list price. Lot's of cars are hot initially but very few are able to sustain. If you are getting a new M5 early and keeping for a year you'll probably lose the sales tax, but not much $ if sold privately.

You do the math, figure out the tax on a CGT and you have almost half of the m5.

And what is your evaluation of the m5 losing only your tax dollars after a year to a private owner I guess we will just wait and see. TOTALLY different vehicles.

When they took it to the dealer they said it would be replaced w/no ? asked. They also stated that the dlr had as many as 15 3.6 motors in stock due to the high attrition rate. So there.

I have had 3 M3's incl the one I still have. None have had any motor issues nor SMG problems.

BBGT2, my comments were based on the fact that you previously stated only higher echelon cars like CGT, Enzo, etc. don't lose money, but some do. 1 year old CGT's have lost the value of a new M5 (approx. 90K) on price alone, not even factoring in tax. The Enzo on the other hand had a sticker around 700 but they can't be bought for much less than 1M. 360 spyders are still near their stickers even after a few years. The new M5 will be in demand for awhile and if he can get an early car and pay list, he probably could sell it near that price to a private buyer a year later if they stay hot. Otherwise, trading it in will most certainly save tax but the dealer won't pay retail.

Also check out m5board.com, a couple have been dyno'ed, guess they are testing in the 530-540hp range... BMW underrated them from the factory... That car is a beast!!

You must have had the only M3 with no issues.

I had three M3 cabs since MY 2000, all of them with real problems.

First one was red, second one was silver, third one was gunmetal grey. I had a black one on order but did not take it.

My 545 is doing OK, but has minor issues.

... and I H A T E iDrive. Takes almost one minute to change the ventilation airflow. You have to go through six menue levels to get anywhere.

I've had 2 M3s, never a problem with either of them. One was an 03.5 SMG and the other was an eary build 01 (demo car actually). No major problems with either. The SMG problems are blown way out of porportion.

The rod bearing issues have been frustrating for many but at the end of the day, I have yet to see any other company stand behind their engine like BMW. Look at all the RMS failures on 986/996 and Porsche has yet to institute an ext warranty on the motor like BMW has. Audi has had numberous problems with their 4.2L V8 in the S4, ALL early production cars needed the motors pulled out and dissassembled, no warranty for them either.

As for the original poster. Definitely get the M5, the car will not depreciate that much (if at all) over the next year and it looks like its going to be awesome based on every piece of literature and review that I have seen.

Thanks,
Adam

Sent my M3 back on a Lemon Law case. Sold my 330Ci to my sister in law and I regret it to this day. She has had so many problems with that car...the damn felt on the inside of the car peels off everytime it gets hot...they keep gluing it back and it keeps coming off...sad.

Red Devil, I stand corrected, I should have never even mentioned such a vehicle like the CGT and the enzo in the same sentence with an m5. Being that the m5 will be mass produced for many years and the others are one of a kind vehicles.
This reminds me of the hype when I had my first RS6 on order and waited 9 months for it to arrive and all the hype was that the dealers were going to be asking $10-15K in juicing fees. They tried and I told them to keep the car luckily for me they didnt keep it and I still bought it with which I was very happy with, did it lose money HELL yes are they keeping their value better 2 years down the line YES. Maybe its just that I never liked BMW's and esp. since that Bangle dude went in and totaly made them look like whatthey look like now. Now as the fact that they are supposedly putting down 536hp to the ground is impressive nonetheless if it is at all true and BMW is not one to underate theor figures. Guess we will know when they hit these shores. Until then we can just speculate and wait a while for them to appreciate in value.

Never confuse Audi's with BMW's. Audi's are one of the worst depreciating cars around......whereas BMW's hold their value best.

BMW M has had a history of retaining value well into the products cycle. The previous M5 was selling at list or over for the first 2.5 years in production. M3 which was produced more still has strong resale value.. The M5 will stay strong for a while, believe it!!

True, Audi's depreciation is terrible. Then again, If I wanted an investment to work for me, I'd try new biz ventures, mutual funds or real estate. Audi, from personal experience is a better built / quality car than BMW. I'm not just saying that from the hundred plus cases of BMW M motors blowing up, or the silent dealer buy backs on the 7 series, but even interior trim, speedos not working, repeat dealer visits etc.. etc.. of several frustrated friends. Would I own a BMW? Probably...Maybe the M6 cab, but so far I haven't. THere was a better audi alternative. Comparing apples to apples - BMW and Audi launches their competing cars at different times. I"d take the current RS6 over the current M5..infact i did. I'd take the nexgen RS6 if it were out now over the upcoming M5, but again, launch dates are years off.

Don't get me wrong, I do like BMW's but quality wise between the two......just not upto par in as Audis (FIT & FINISH-wise).

I know all about Lou's love for BMW first hand, but everytime he got in my a8 or rs6, he was pleased. Then of course once he gets out he'd make fun of it.

To answer the question of the poster... TT over an M5 anyday. There is no substitute. If you plan on switching for the sake of change..until the 997TT comes out as you say.. go for it. A little porsche hiadous is never harm.

I am in Ireland right now and the first car I saw when I came out of the airport in Dublin was a new M5. Listen, I know that I don't have much experience with first model year cars, but from an investment standpoint, what do you have to lose. Keep in mind its a high end BMW. German engineering and performance hasn't let me down yet. Go for it! I'll try and attach pics of the M5 from Dublin.

BBGT2, I had the same thing with an E55. I put down a deposit and was first in line when new-gen 2004 were coming out. The saleslady called to tell me they had their first allocation and that I could order at 10K over. I immediately said forget it and after she said could I hold on she came right back to say I could now have it at sticker, but I had decided I wasn't getting rid of the M5 for it. As for Audi, I've driven a friends S6, RS & S4 and while they are quite nice it certainly was no BMW in the overall dept. Those of us who like them, like me and Lou, realize that while they may not be the most powerful, best brakes, etc. they are the most complete package in that class from a sporting perspective right out of the box.

There's videos of a 510bhp TT and the E60 M5 on m5board and they're neck & neck.

My guess is when you guys hit 90mph he will start reeling you in and after that it's not even funny..

470ish rwhp is respect! even if it's in a family car...

(sorry for the the M5-is-God-post, couldn't help it...)
Only got a brief clean run behind the M5 today. there were over 10 of us in the group and a bit of traffic, so its not entirely conclusive.

still, i had my foot flat on the gas, and my friend in the M5 was definitely NOT getting any closer. and yes, truth be told, it did feel as if he was ever so slightly pulling away.

he also went head-to-head today with another friend's upsolute-chipped SL55 (on paper rated at 540HP). up to about 110mph, they were neck and neck, and then the M5 started pulling ever so slightly. but afterwards, turned out the SL55 didn't have it completely floored. or so he claims!

however way you look at it, its an amazing achievement for a 4-door sedan. props to BMW!

here's a pic from today (sorry, taken with my phone)

Red Devil,

I understand your point we all have diff. tastes and needs, I admit I have always been a Porsche/Audi lover and had a BMW once a 540i sport but had too much trouble with it from the get go and sold it after 3 months of aggravation, whereas with my Porsche's and Audi's I havent had any trouble with and I like their performance they give, granted I am not a track guy and have never tracked my cars so you guys have me on that.
In my opinion ALL vehicles should have the brake system that is on my GT2. Most cars from the factory do come with weak brake systems and yes my RS6 is on of them, I had a UrS4 and the brakes on that were scary. Anyway this post was about a question on whether to go with a TT or an M5 and I was just voicing my opinion to go for the TT.
