3-blink turn signal relay?
Guys, it really seems as if the OP abandoned this writeup. That's too bad, too, because a lot of us are sitting with the additional Passat wiring harness, and the pin extraction tool.
Anyone got the wiring-diagram reading chops to be able to figure this out and potentially do a writeup for us less gifted readers? I can send the pin extraction tool to anyone who wants to use it. Sheesh, I'd even consider sending the wiring harness *and* extraction tool to someone in the Bay Area who is adventuresome and wants to try this, and then promises to help me with my conversion when done. You can keep the harness (~$70 value). Oh, and of course, must do a write-up (or I can do it while being helped) to post here so that we can all benefit. Right now, both the harness and the tool are just sitting collecting dust.
Any takers?

Ok so im in the same boat as you guys, i have the amazon tool & the wiring harness & my car is in my garage with the interior away at the trimmers so not able to wire it in & see if i can get it to work.
But i think it should be as straight forward as Sanyata suggested. (just match up the wires)
Ive had a look at the hazard wiring in the car & apart from 1 wire they all match up with the same colours that are shown on the golf wiring diagram that comes in the box.
From studying the wiring in the car & the instructions i think it should work like this:
Remove Black/White/Green wire from hazard terminal & put into slot 1 on supplied connector. Then put the White/Green wire from the new harness into the now empty slot on the hazard plug.
Remove Black/Green wire from hazard terminal & put into slot 2 on supplied connector. Then put the Green wire from the new harness into the now empty slot on the hazard plug.
Remove Black/White wire from hazard terminal & put into slot 3 on supplied connector. Then put the White wire from the new harness into the now empty slot on the hazard plug.
Remove Brown wire from hazard terminal & put into slot 6 on supplied connector. Then put the Brown wire from the new harness into the now empty slot on the hazard plug.
Remove Blue/Grey wire from hazard terminal & put into slot 7 on supplied connector. Then put the Black/White wire from the new harness into the now empty slot on the hazard plug.
Then all you should need to do is connect the relay & the harness plug & hopefully it should work.
As i said i have not tried this yet due to not being able to turn the ignition on, but after looking at the wiring you are basically just adding the relay to the hazard wiring too create a loop with the relay now in line.
Hopefully someone can try this & let us know if its correct.

Thanks Chef and Vantaredoc. Looking forward to the reports. From what Chef wrote, it seems as if it should be straight-forward. How much work is involved in getting to the hazard wiring? I haven't checked, is it like the key surround where it just pops off?
Requires removal of the dash piece above the instrument cluster. Memory serves me right, hazard button and plastic surround must come out. There is a torx bolt in slot and one on the opposite side of dash trim. Top piece will pop off with a little persuasion. Make sure you place a towel or something on the opposing piece when you use a panel popper tool to convince it to pop up to expose wiring loom and connector. I can get to there, but didn't have the pin tool at the time and didn't feel like going further and busting a connector.
May have to trim the wires shorter if you run out of room to tuck relay and harness back in the dash space. I will have to shorten mine since I fitted a alpine 8" navi deck there and it is taking up the free space from previous install.
I'll get to it probably in two weeks after I do motor mounts and new rear swaybar so if no write up by then I'll take pictures and contribute back.

Just as Rxbike explained, pretty easy to be honest.
Here is a link to a writeup that shows how to remove the cluster to gain access to the hazard wiring:

Looks like it shouldn't be too long before we get our heads around this mod

I worked for a couple hours on the install last night. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful
My plug is not pinned out like this drawing or any of the drawings I found on line! I tried almost every configuration and managed to blow two fuses! I gave up after being "over served"
I will try again tonight

I tried again last night. I have to work today and probably tomorrow
If someone could find and send me the exact diagram for hazard switch for the Passat or Golf IV 99-2004 I will cross reference and figure out tonight.

@Vantaredoc -- I posted a request on a leading Passat forum, and a helpful user there replied with the B5 (the model # of that year Passat) wiring diagram that includes the wiring for the "Emergency Flasher Switch." I'll attach it here, and here's the link to that forum post and reply.
The diagram encompasses the whole indicator subsystem for the Passat, so hopefully, it will be helpful in your hacking attempt.
