Old to da New

Old to da New
well not that old, and not that new
Went to visit and old friend who has a fetish for older cars.
He has an '86 911 SC, 70's something targa, an old 300CD benz, now showing off his latest acquisition.
an 82 911 Turbo Euro spec with a RUF kit.
I offered to trade him mine for it but he said he doesn't like the later 911 shapes
Here's a shot of mine with his turbo, which would you pick?

apples and oranges. the water cooled turbos have zero soul when compared to the air cooled turbos. the 996+ cars are boring to drive IMO, big and heavy and they feel like it.
air cooled porsches, no question
air cooled porsches, no question

my dad sold his '84 930(awesome runner, super clean/low km's, sport seats, LSD, etc.) this past Spring, we both agree my GT2 is the more OVERALL enjoyable car, but the 930 definitely had more character, and drama at lower speeds...he will be on the hunt for a 996TT/GT3 soon
Cheers,

But thats a bit of a bold statement.
I wouldn't mind owning a 930 for the cool factor
I've driven many generation porsches, 70, 80s, and early 90s and now own a 996.
Sure the older Porsches have some character like a vintage car, but for the most part, I find my newer one is a way better performer and is very fun to drive.

I sold my '78 930 because it scared the sheet out of me. Granted it had some Andial upgrades and was very fast, when that K27 kicked in it was hold on for dear life....hence the nickname "widow maker". I much prefer the kinder, gentler 996TT Cab...to each his own.

Having both is the best of both worlds! My '86 is a raw, visceral beast. My 2001 TT is a smooth velvet hammer. Want to go to the track? Take the 996. Want to rip up the street? Take the 930.

2nd, i have owned about 15-18 911's with about 2/3 of those being air-cooled, i prefer the aircooled cars by far
3rd, character and soul. you stated "I offered to trade him mine for it but he said he doesn't like the later 911 shapes
Here's a shot of mine with his turbo, which would you pick?" why the hell would you want to trade, doesnt make sense to me but to each there own, sounds contradictory
4th, you asked for opinions, every doctor, lawyer, yuppie, etc drives a 911 now, they have all the creature comforts etc. dont get me wrong, i have owned several 996tt, 997tt and a couple NA 911's as well, nothing compares to the feeling of driving the air-cooled cars IMO not to mention you dont see them on every corner like you do today

According to Adrian Streather: The 996 is lighter and faster than a 993. 996tt and 930 were not compared AFAIK.
Sitting on Turn#3 at the 52nd Rolex last wknd, it is amazing to hear the 911's scream for 24 hrs. No other entries can hit those rpm's.
In order to win at these competitions, it was necessary to goto WC.
Porsche took the checkerd flag at the 24, with a type 907* in 1968.
