Air Filters on Turbos, Fender Intakes or other?
Air Filters on Turbos, Fender Intakes or other?
There was a thread started on this a month ago - that just disappeared. So I want to ask the question again. With more and more people running mafless or true MAP with aftermarket ecu's what are people doing for air filters?
Ive seen fender intakes, and a few that are now running air filters on their turbos. Then there is the modified airboxs the ES Motor have started running with their 997s.
So - what are people's thoughts. What are people running?? Benefits and pros and cons?? What about filters directly on the turbo. Are people really running these as daily drivers? Has anyone had any issues?
Let's hear your thoughts and experiences?

Yeah I remember that threat exactly since I was following it closely. I asked one of the admins to find out what happened and he couldn't figure out why it was just deleted.
Either way, thanks for starting another back up. There were already a few good contributions with pictures etc. Hopefully this thread doesn't disappear also. I am thinking of going Protomotive mafless, so this is a great topic for me and am sure as well for others.

We did that 10 years ago on 996s.. nothing new...
problem is that it is prone to debris and one little pebble will destroy your turbo and then some... do it at your own risk...

Scan down a 1/3 of the way to see the fender piping for the filter for the turbo. I was going to run filters off of the turbo then I decided to run it on top of the intercoolers.
Fyi it was my thread that got deleted. PAT is one who posted several photos and Markski had a photo of his setup. Both can be found on here with some searching.

This is a VERY VERY popular practice in the turbo world. Mafless setups work off of speed density ala the Map sensor. No need for a full intake and inlet piping. Faster spool and more power.
Trending Topics
996tt ECU can not do true speed density. It can only do Alpha N when mafless which is not as good. The ABS also depends on the MAF for torque and acceleration readings which is the reason why ABS/MAf lights come on when MAF goes bad. ABS is not happy when you delete the MAF.
Why and How would a pebble go through a K&N filter, unless filter is damaged and has a pebble size hole in it?????

Todd at Protomotive said he has a perfect setup and tune for Mafless utilizing stock ECU. Maybe he does something a little different? I am not really concerned when you are dealing with possibly the best porsche tuner in the game. I'm sure down the road I would switch over to a Pro Efi or some other standalone, but for a weekend highway cruiser I am gonna stay where I'm at for now lol.
Also, I agree with you, I don't see how a pebble can be sucked into a K&N filter. Plenty of people run it with that setup with no issues. Maybe they get dirty from time to time but you can just clean or replace, they are cheap enough.

also i am by no means suggesting a standalone to the OP. im just letting him and others intrested in this know the side effects of deleting the MAF.

The map sensor has no effect on the calculation of load on the me7.8 dme. Nor can the code be altered to look at the map for load calculation.
"MAFless" tuning is an awful idea. I have refrained form saying that publicly.... Fortunately ( or unfortunately depending how you look at it), the rest of the ME7.8 ecu is smart enough to keep bad things from happening when running cars this way.
Its just not good tuning.

Is that why all the Porsche race cars are mafless?? Btw I am sure this could be debated by various tuners.
I know personally you run such a high fuel pressure has been debated as a good choice also. But then throwing a bigger pump at it to make it safer?
I mean everyone is entitled to their opinion and has their way of doing things. Some agree and some don't. Some tuners are better at mafless and some aren't.

Cup cars are N/A
Cup cars use a different ECU
Cupcars use a Motorsports ABS that has a gyro for input.
Cupcars don't care for street and part throttle driveability that much.
MAFs fail. Cupcars can't afford to have that slowing them down.
BUT you already knew all that I'm sure...
