Has anyone in Ohio fixed this, either by pinning or welding? I live in Columbus and would be willing to go to "the mountain" to get this taken care of. Any and all ideas appreciated.
I called around to local Porsch repair facilities and none has seen any coolant fitting failure so far.

IPS Motorsports did a yellow car last year. They are in Lewis Center. Every one at the dealers I have talked to said they have never heard of the issue. I don't track so not really worried about much.

herrdrpepper is infamous around these parts
Thanks for the info. I don't track mine either, but it is high milage--90K--and I am uncertain as to our immunity. Watchful waiting seems risky.

My understanding is all that happens is you loose coolant and you shut it down. No harm no foul. What's the difference of doing it preventively or when and if it ever happens. Maybe a tow bill at best? I understand the track thing of laying down a slippery substance but if we don't track, who cares.

Ok....you win. I don't know how to argue against your logic....

I'm not big on sitting on side of road or who knows where or what time waiting on a tow!!!

Dude, did you not see my posts?? I fixed mine myself after blowing one out right when I got the car. I knew nothing of the problem before the late night that it happened on the 8 mile trip from my shop to my house! After seeing how they are assembled, I can promise you, the odds are in favor of glue failure and fitting pop out. Not "if" ...it's "When"...

It's funny how you feel when your car is puking all it's coolant and all you can do at the time is search the internet for reasons why! Then you type in 996tt coolant fitting failure and you get slammed with thread after thread.... Yeah, I almost see your point about "hype"....NOT! Have a nice Easter..

Hey Vantaredoc, not to be a dick or start a fight but this is misinformation. You have no knowledge or numbers to back this statement up. I understand it happened to you but that doesn't mean it will happen to everybody. An NHTSA claim was opened up for coolant line fittings and later closed. It was discovered that the 997 had it worse than 996 by a huge margin and considered rare in the 996. I know there are lots of stories on 6speedonline (where people come to share these stores) but in terms of members vs. failures here it's still quite rare. There are countless members here with no issues.

While I feel for you that it happened and you had to deal with it (which sucks) you shouldn't be spreading a "not if but when" story.

Let me re-state my "if not when" statement and add "IMHO".... Yes???

I have been a mechanic all my life and I understand and appreciate fine engineering.....

Dang your angry. I just do not agree it is that much of a problem. We can just agree to disagree. No need to get all pissy. I had a MBE55 and read all the supposed issues with that car and I never had one. I had 2 separate E55s as well.

Who knows the probability associated with this occurrence, but regardless if it's on the track or on the street if water hits your rear tire contact patch unexpectedly the result "could" be less than desirable. I had mine welded on my 03 GT2 as a precaution when the motor was out going to 3.8. Oh, and just because the government says it's a "non event and safe" means absolutely nothing to me.

I'm not angry at all. I'm just disappointed that such a great and highly engineered machine has such a poor design in a very critical area and folks put their blinders on and then tell me that just because a gubment authority says there's not a widespread problem and I am spreading mis-information If this ever happens to you, do me a favor, watch the mechanic pull it apart and see for yourself what has me disappointed. It doesn't take a gubment agency, rocket scientist or highly trained engineer to understand that THERE IS A PROBLEM (I forgot to add IMHO for the King...lol)! Until then, good luck and keep your triple AAA paid up.

Have a nice day. Key board talk always make me "sound angry" when I'm just trying state my experiences and what I came across...not just "hype". Here I'll add this....

BTW...It is WAY cheaper to "pin" them before the pop out! The motor does not need to be pulled, just dropped down from the mounts. I did the job in one day having never laid hands on a Porsche engine in my life! Yes they could possibly leak in the future, but it will last long enough to get me off the highway or even home, not catastrophic coolant loss that could wreck me or a mini van full of children on the freeway! I wish I had a video of the steam show I was leaving at over 80 on the highway

You are right about one thing...I came here after THE POP OUT FOR INFO ON SAID POP OUT! After spending over an hour on the side of the road trying to find a blown hose or clamp that could have come off...with no success and water pouring out as fast as I could pour it in and not being able to see where it was coming from. I spent the next hour searching the web for "coolant loss 2001 996tt" and guess where I landed So I will give you that one. I guess you guys trust your goobment agencies just a little more than we do!

I also wonder if the pop out has anything to do with how hard you drive and the ambient temperature. Since it's so hot here, I think that plays a role.
