It was discovered that the 997 had it worse than 996 by a huge margin and considered rare in the 996. I know there are lots of stories on 6speedonline (where people come to share these stores) but in terms of members vs. failures here it's still quite rare. There are countless members here with no issues.

While I feel for you that it happened and you had to deal with it (which sucks) you shouldn't be spreading a "not if but when" story.

I had mine welded as soon as I saw the first failure in our local Denver area. I have seen 2 more cars loose their fittings at our track over the last two years one nearly crashing after the fitting popped in 90mph uphill sweeper. Those are odds I wouldn't wanna play if I owned one of these cars and used them for more than just cars n coffee duty. I had mine welded because I didn't wanna crash or cause someone else to. Makes me sleep better at night and I feel it's the responsible thing to do. Just my $0.02....

So you think this problem is so prevalent that it needs done however the Govt. and Porsche ignored the fact? I just find that a little hard to believe. I wonder what the age and mileage failure rate is on the few that have had the actual failure. Not from the preventative aspect but the actual failure cars.

The govt and Mercedes don't think there's any issue with the e class cars leaking fuel into the backseats but it happens on a regular basis. Look how many have failed just on this forum. That was enough for me to act premptively

Have you considered how much this could have wound up costing Porsche if the decision went the other way?

I think we have beat this horse enough. You seem to have an opinion and we have ours. I will always voice my opinion if I see what I think is a problem and I can prevent accident or injury to a person or property

Honestly, I don't care what the gov't or Porsche says. I've seen the failures with my own eyes and our local welder has done a bunch of these over the last couple of years. I just didn't feel comfortable taking the risk and crashing a my car (or having someone crash theirs as a result) so I had it done and never looked back. Plus, most people shopping for these cars usually educate themselves in the process and will factor in a price adjustment if this has not been done anyway. I think having the pipes fixed is a big selling point when the time comes as this is a fairly well publicized issue on all the forums. Additionally, the fix is not that expensive if you combine it with a clutch job or some other engine out upgrades. Once your engine is out the weld job only adds another $1000 or so. That's what I did.

Question...cost aside someone could use the welded piece as a model and reproduce it as one whole piece; the welded portions on the model would be molded into the cast piece. Might even be possible to do on a 3-D printer.......... No???

I spent the next hour searching the web for "coolant loss 2001 996tt" and guess where I landed So I will give you that one. I guess you guys trust your goobment agencies just a little more than we do!

I also wonder if the pop out has anything to do with how hard you drive and the ambient temperature. Since it's so hot here, I think that plays a role.
Hey, sorry wasn't trying to start a fight, and I hear ya... I'm not impressed when I see the number of failures we have. It's a "known issue" which means it happens at a disproportionally high rate, like the slave / accumulator failure. I had that The coolant line is a particularly nasty issue as well, leaves you stranded and makes a mess.

You are correct, it seems to happen a lot more to folks who live in really hot states (Florida, Texas, Cali, Arizona etc.) and people who track the car a lot (a lot of heat cycles). It seems to be less prevalent to guys up north (like myself) where it's not 100*+ all year round.

My point to the misinformation bit (sorry that's a harsh word) is that I think some times we're also fear mongering for something that overall is pretty small percentage. With that said however, I'm just waiting for mine to pop out and **** my coolant everywhere lol... I had a Boxster before and the tank cracked and pissed my coolant all over, so I'm "once bitten twice shy"... Nice of Porsche to at least drop the price of the coolant resovior form $799 to $199 however. No admission of fault there at all...

It's all good. One thing is for sure, when I buy my next one, it will be repaired BEFORE, not after, now that I am "informed" of the "potential" "non-issue"....lol
